As there is now no evidence I guess you have to take the seller's word for it but presume it's their liability if the car is spotted with no tax.

Yep, if you test drive it and don't end up buying it, it's the sellers problem. If you do buy it, just make sure you tax it on the same day you test drove it.
  • It's a nitemare just took my son to buy a used car 2hrs away lovely car bought it , transferred insurance over, went online to tax it, No, rand dvla and because the car was sorn very recently 3 days I think , it can't be taxed online for the next 5 days? Post office only 6 pm at nite. Son at work all weekend till 4.30 pm. Luckily found a post office that believe it or not is open locally until 11pm . I think these new rule changes are designed to suppress private selling and make us all pay extra to buy from the trade

So why do people advertise cars as taxed if the new owner has to buy new tax?

probably because like you they have missed the change last October which was in the newspapers, on TV and all over the 'net, and still don't know about it.
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....

I heard that changes in Road Tax

Don't worry, you don't have to pay road tax anymore..... It was abolished in 1936.
