Road Tax Changes
I heard that changes in Road Tax mean that now the tax isn't transferrable, so when you sell a car, the tax doesn't go with the car. Is this right?
So, does that mean that when you sell a car, you just have to apply to get a refund on the road tax?
I've been looking on Autotrader website at second hand cars and lots of adverts say that the car is taxed. So, I'm a bit confused?

You have not heard that as if it is a rumour, the new rules applied from September or October.
Yes the car can be advertised as taxed, but it's not transferable to the new owner, they have to tax it themselves and the current owner will get a refund on the whole remaining months left.0 -
So why do people advertise cars as taxed if the new owner has to buy new tax?0
-
I bet there are loads of people getting caught out on this, buying used cars from private sellers with current tax not realising the rules have changed. They only find out weeks/months later that they are driving untaxed after the tax was automatically refunded to the seller.0

You'd think they would have had stuff in the papers about it!0

I've heard that road tax has been abolished.0

me too - only recently though - 1937? :rotfl:
Have to admit though, I call it road tax not VED0 -
It's legal to road test a taxed car before purchase.
I guess that's a useful point.
If a car is advertised as having tax it means you can test drive it on a public road. If a car does not have tax it means you can't.
As there is now no evidence I guess you have to take the seller's word for it but presume it's their liability if the car is spotted with no tax.Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0
