As an avid reader the one thing I always wanted was a big snuggly chair/ bean bag/ papasan chair to curl up in with my book!

Buy the 8 year old an experience doing something unusual (plenty within budget). Toys and games get quickly forgotten but my daughter will never forget standing over the side of the Grand Canyon a few months ago or feeding the rays in Maldives last year

Or watching the strangers burying a dog in our old back garden.

    It's a wind up. ;)

Sense of humour failure. Spent this afternoon alternating between making enough chilli to feed a small nation (only slight exaggeration) and wrapping lots of toddler-tat of the Frozen variety.

Does your daughter like music, OP? Maybe she'd like to play an instrument? I would suggest CDs but I think they're a bit old hat now, with everybody simply downloading what they want. Another suggestion might be an MP3 player?

I'm sorry but buying an instrument is a bad idea.
How many badly played renditions of Row row row the bloody boat do you want?

If it's the one I am thinking of I think that soap opera has gone down in MSE history :rotfl:

The descant recorder hasn't got a good reputation, it's true.

  • Would a sewing machine work? My DD started sewing at that age and makes her own clothes and loves it. Or a music, docking, karaoke system.
