Telephone line ADSL booster?

Hi,

Ever since switching to TalkTalk we can no longer get the ADSL signal on our phone extension, only on the master socket. We have no power sockets in range downstairs to connect the modem to the master socket.

Is there any way of boosting the ADSL signal via the telephone line upstairs so we can leave the modem there? All worked fine under Tiscali.

Theres no way of boosting it as such, but I assume that your TT bb is faster than what you had with Tiscali so your extension wiring is probably causing your problem.
What you need to do is remove the bell wire from your extension at both ends, you only need to have pins 2 and 5 connected.

OK so I thought it was the wiring not the faceplate that needed altering. But on the diagrams, I can only see 3 and 5 labelled (right hand side on diagram 4). where are the others?

Also, do I cut the wires or just pull them from the connector (like cables on a motherboard?).

Finally,when you say remove the bell cable, me cutting or doing whatever with these wires won't affect phone service on the line including the ringing of the phones?

It sure looks like it could fix the issue, I was getting 5.0mbps with the USB speedtouch from the master socket, the extension is about 20ft long.

No dont cut the wires just pull them out carefully youll need to use a little pressure as my ones were quite firmly in there

Modern phones do not need the bell cct.
If you look at diagram 4 again you will see that its showing pins 2 and 5 connected, any other wires should be removed.
I am assuming that your extension is wired to the faceplate and not just plugged in.

You can get a better idea of what your line is capable of by plugging into the test socket.

BT still have some branded phones made for them that still require the ring capacitor from the master socket. Though these are usually the crappy unknown Chinese manufactured ones. Anything to save a few pennies per phone.

Um, a tad confused now.

Downstairs we havethe socket, thereis'a cable plugged into that that gos upstairs and ends at another BT type socket with the two screws, into that are doublers and filters and so on.

Do I have to do the wire removal from both sockets, or would just the upstairs one do as presumably then there wouldn't be a circuit for the current to flow? If I mess up the top socket it's relatively OK, but if I screw up the master it's going to get me persona non grata.

If you are using an extension cable that is plugged into your master socket, that is most likely the cause of your problems. These are OK for voice but generally use cheap and nasty cable that is not twisted pairs, which reduces noise pick-up. You really need proper hard wired telephone cable from your master to the socket upstairs for broadband although good quality extensions can be purchased with twisted pair shielded cable.
