TalkTalk demanding payment

Hi there,
I had a work flat in North Wales between February '12 and July '13.
Upon moving out I ensured all my energy, council tax, water and communications accounts had been settled. To my knowledge, and it's difficult to remember as it happened 18mths ago, I informed TalkTalk of this over the phone in July '13. Upon cancelling this account TalkTalk no longer took direct debits from my account, it's important to note I did not cancel these.... they stopped taking them.
Today, out of nowhere a company called LCI phones me and hits me with a bill for £220 for 6mths line rental/broadband services between July 13 and Feb 14. They are stating that the account was cancelled incorrectly and I am liable for payment.... the claims agent keeps repeating "it is unfair, but this is how all the big companies make their money, and I am liable"
I smell a rat here, but assuming TalkTalk are pursuing me, what are my rights?

Did they send you a letter?0

No, nothing through the door.
This call was the first I've heard about the whole thing.0 -
If the DDs were open and they didn't take the money it suggests that the account was correctly cancelled. I'd ignore it - at least until something in writing arrives.
Incidentally which phone number did they use (mobile or landline) and how did they get it?0 -
Mobile phone, but then.... I only have a mobile phone.0

I would contact TalkTalk directly and ensure nothing is outstanding.
Do not entertain LCI. They need your address to be able to enforce any payment anyway. Without an address they can't take you to court.
I don't like the statement"it is unfair, but this is how all the big companies make their money, and I am liable"
If you were liable then it would be fair as it would be in line with the T&Cs you agreed to when you took service with TalkTalk originally.
If TalkTalk agree you do not owe anything I would report this to the police.0
