I don't see why you think it was 'cloned'.
Most likely all transactions were online that means that only the card details were compromised. A chipped card apparently can't be cloned, at least for using in UK.

A UK chipped card can be cloned, however it needs specific equipment and also access to certain "insider" crypto certificates, so the odds of it happening are extremely slim.

Just had the same thing done to myself with Tesco visa card
Dodgy transaction on 20th November which I obviously didn't know about
    Statement arrived 5th December

Didn't recognise buying something from Beijing

They are brilliant to "work" with as far as I am concerned

    Rang them and explained
Within 5 minutes card was cancelled / stopped

They checked every transaction on my card from the fraud date

Everything that was to happen next explained to me including the refund of the dodgy amount

received confirmation of card stopped within 2 days

Received new card within 7 days
  • In my experience Barclaycard are pretty good in situations like this. A couple of years ago our card was declined in a supermarket. When I telephoned to enquire about the situation I was immediately put through to their fraud department who asked me if I had placed bets online at 3am and 6am that morning. When I confirmed that I hadn't they went through all recent transactions with me and once we had agreed these the card was cancelled, a new card was issued and the bets never appeared on my statement.

Seems pretty dumb to use stolen CC details to pay something as traceable as a parking fine.
loose does not rhyme with choose but lose does and is the word you meant to write.

Theres no reason to clone the chip when fallback (Tricking the terminal into thinking the chip is broken so you can swipe it) is still an option. On some terminals this is very very simple.

Yes I thought that, a congestion charge or parking ticket will be tied against a plate which can be traced back easily, to an extent, if the vendor co-operates, even a purchase would have to be delivered to someone, somewhere (even if it's a click & collect thing) and records would identify the person.

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

Hamleys London, British gas, parking fines in Manchester and congestion charges in London are all likely to be online or telephone payments.

So the fraudster probably needed your debit card number, CVV and billing address (but not the physical card).

Assuming none of these websites uses 'Verified by Visa', Barclays will just cancel the transactions, refund you and take the money back from the merchants.

There is a slight possibility that Hamleys etc will contact you asking for their money back. This is because some people order stuff, have it delivered and keep it, but then claim a fraudster ordered it. But just explain to them.
  • Would you believe it. Have had an excellent outcome from Santander in similar cicumstances. Got a phone call saying somebody had tried twice to get cash with my credit card in New York. Fortunateley they declined the attempts and called me.Cancelled my card and sent me a new one within days.
How does that tie in with cards not being cloned?

Probably because most US cards are not chipped, and still use the stripe, so I assume ATMs there will all accept a card without a chip. It's a lot easier to clone the stripe.
