card cloned :( - advice please

I'm hoping someone will be able to give me some advice.

To my dismay when i went to my mobile barclays banking app i found that i was £1200 overdrawn, this never happens I account for every penny. The last 2 years I have managed to keep in the black and pride myself on it. I phoned barclays, who told me I have 4 transactions pending, one for hamleys London, British gas, parking fines in Manchester & congestion charges in London. None of these I have made. I informed barclays, they have said that until they show on my statement they cannot do anything about it and even when it does they cannot guarantee I'll get my money back. I've cancelled my card but have no idea what else I can do. All my bills go out of this account :( .

  • Barclay's must prove you made these transaction or refund you.
If you have not made the transactions, then Barclays are the victims of this fraud not you and the Finacial ombudsman will tell them the same.
However they are clever, if they tell you to cut up the card do not, keep it safe so you can prove you have it in your possession.

  • Thank you, I still have the card so will keep hold of it. They're sending a new one. I have never experienced anything like this before.
  • You need to start your research now as you are going to have to lay the law down very firmly to them without quavering or letting them talk you over.
Once they realise you know your rights and know what to do next if they pull a fast one, they usually play the game.

I don't see why you think it was 'cloned'.
Most likely all transactions were online that means that only the card details were compromised. A chipped card apparently can't be cloned, at least for using in UK.
  • Okay, so re-iterate that I did not make these transactions. Stupid question but do I say that they have to give me a refund or just keep re-iterating that it wasn't me.

  • It's so horrible isn't it I hardly slept last night.

    Please stop scaremongering.

The OP just needs to keep in touch with Barclays. When the transactions debit they will be refunded whilst Barclays look into whats happened. If they are genuinely fraudulent transactions, the OP will not be liable.

If any charges are incurred because of the fraud, they will be refunded. The OP needs to keep an eye on any bills that are due to go out and let Barclays know if the funds are not there because of the fraud.

    What are you worrying about?

The transactions are not even posted to your account yet.
If they do ever get posted, you've been given advice what to do.

What was Barclays explanation of why they would not refund you if you did not authorise the transactions (or were otherwise actively involved in the fraud)?

I think you cancelling your credit card if you can't sleep due to worrying about it is probably the best thing you could have done.
(It might not stop the immediate issues, but if it helps you sleep better :))
