Selling to make a profit is trading and you should seriously consider registering as self-employed with HMRC. If you were just selling items that previously belonged to you and that you no longer wanted, then that wouldn't be trading.


A hobby is something that is done purely for pleasure not money.

Thanks for everyones replies its been very helpful. I'll look into different ways of making £20 a week extra. I suppose at first I could declutter and sell on ebay I have lots I could get rid of so that would be a big help until I can find a way thats not going to get me into trouble hopefully.

Selling personal possessions that were never bought to resell is quite legal, and does not result in any 'income' for benefits purposes, the money from the sold assets is capital - which goes towards your savings limit - not income.
This is very different from the rules for trading.
