Are you still allowed to earn extra money when on benefits?

There doesn't seem to be much information on this.

If you are still allowed to make extra income how much?

It would be from selling on ebay items that are not my own but items I have found on bootsales etc.

I would be careful of this. I asked my adviser about this (whilst claiming JSA) I was told that they take the WHOLE amount received.

    For example

    Item brought/made for £2
    Sold for £5
    postage charged £1
    postage cost £1
paypal/listing charges £0.50 (yes I know thats wrong keeping it simple)

profit is £2.50 HOWEVER for benefit (JSA) purposes they take this an earning of £6. They take the total amount of money you received as their figure NOT the profit.

I make jewellery and wanted to sell some, I thought it might fill a gap in my CV but taking the above in consideration, it was possible I could end up losing money by doing so. Along with the hassle of declaring it to HRMC it was not worth it.

    Thats harsh :(

How often do you declare it to them and how? Seems a bit mean x

Yes I thought that at time.

Hopefully someone will come along that actually knows the rule on this, I would be interested to hear if this is correct. As I said I was told this by my adviser when I asked about it, but it would not be the first time advisers have not [STRIKE]told the truth[/STRIKE] understood what the actual rules are.

I think you have to fill out a form declaring the amount every time you sign on, but again someone would have to confirm this.
  • Wouldnt they class it as earnings though. Like when I did a paper round a while back, it was 25 a week and the first 5 would be waived.

Single parent £10 is that the parents main carer or both.

Single parent is £20 and the main carer will be the one receiving the child benefit

Aren't you supposed to register as a business seller if you are buying stuff to sell at a profit on ebay & also have to register with the tax office as the earnings could become taxable?

You need to research things thoroughly before making a decision about going down this route.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.
