Tiling over tiles

Hi,
I am in the process of doing up my house to rent it out. I have some pretty grim bathroom tiles which cover quite a bit of the wall. To save myself time, money and mess I am considering tiling directly over these tiles rather than taking the whole lot off and potentially replastering.
Does anyone have any experience/advice on this please?! Should I use anything different in terms of adhesive or grout etc - and is there anything extra i should do in the way of preparation?
Any advice gratefully received!

If I were you I would not tile over old tiles.0 -
As far as i know and its quite a bit you just get on with it as if its just a plastered wall.
Just phone my tiller and he says no problem, and the best stuff for doing tile on tile is an adhesive called Ball bluestar, most tile shops will have it.0 -
not a problem at all, i have done this b4 with no problems at all, and you have nice straight lines to follow as well

I did it years go in my bathroom and no problems - no special tile cement etc. The only thing is that the tiles underneath need to be well fixed to the wall. If they were bulging or loose at all then I would remove them.I'm Glad to be here... At my age I'm glad to be anywhere!!

If the plaster under the tiles is sound then it isn't a problem. Will you be going around/ behind any pipes, the sink etc?0

I tiled over existing tiles and it turned out well.
One thing I would suggest is to score all the old tiles across the face to 'break' the glaze. This gives a better base for the new adhesive to grip on to.
5 years later and I wish the things would fall off 'cos I'm bored with them now!Herman - MP for all!0 -
I have tiled on top of tiles no problem, but the originals need to be fitted sound, I have also used tile paint that transformed daughters old pink bathroom tiles into new looking white ones as a quick cheap liven up.0

Thanks for all your replies...
Is tile paint really that good? To be honest if the finish was half decent then i would rather do that. I just want to get out of the place and rent it out.
What is involved? Do you just simply paint over the whole lot, or just the tiles? Do you have to replace the grout or anything?0 -
I used tile paint about 5 years ago.
It does stink to high heaven and you can get high on it. So make sure all the windows are open.
The one I used I had to paint on a base coat and then the colour. It did not look to bad. But had to becareful because of runs etc.
