16 Hour Shift

I think people should know these rules - because although it's completely possible to work very long hours/have short breaks before returning to work, you should never be MADE to. I have done these very long shifts because I felt it was worth that effort on my part to ensure the very small company I work for met an important deadline. However, if I'd been asked to do it for no good reason, I'd have happily told my boss I wasn't prepared to. I would be very unhappy if the law was ever changed so I couldn't be so flexible, because sometimes it's required.
Unless you're in a job like truck driving, where the hours are restricted by law, I think employees need to know their rights and then be flexible within reason - their reason and their employer's reason.
Obviously I'm aware there are some horrible bosses/companies who force such hours on people, which is totally out of order.
They should indeed. As long as people know the facts.
On another thread someone was complaining that their employer wasn't giving them their legal one hour break in a nine and a half hour shift.
Unfortunately for them that is not the legal requirement so best not to go in all guns blazing with the wrong info!0 -
Admits that my mind is boggling at the thought of anyone either wanting to do this or allowing themselves to be forced into it.
I'm retired now (from an office job) but soon found that the idea of even doing a couple of hours (voluntary) overtime was too much to do more than a few times.0 -
I am comfortable with my original interpretation of the law, i.e that no one can be compelled to work more than 13 hours in any 24 hour period.

http://www.acas.org.uk/index.aspx?articleid=1373Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0 -

Good for you
Interesting to note that some of what the ACAS link states is not contained in the regulations.0 -
To cut to the quick, the OP needs to say what they do for a living and why they may be required to do this, and how often. Back to back shifts are not unlawful. Nor are extensively long hours per se. We need to know the working pattern and why this pattern exists.0
