Which backs up what Elfbert said. It is not a day but a 24 hour period.

The maximum number of hours work in 24 hours is 13 hours.

    If only that were true.

    But sadly isn't.

If you do B2B 11hr break 13hr work 13hr work 11hr break that fall with in the law as drafted so 26 hours(with 20min break) is allowed.

If the law was specified any consecutive(rolling) 24hr period then that would have made the max single shift as 13hours.

There mat be case law that clarifies.

So we are saying that someone can work 24 hours solid as long as they have 11 hours off before they do another 24 hours?
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

Perhaps you need to reconsider your basic arithmetic, clearly the maximum number of hours work in 24 hours is 24. Any suggestion that it's less is complete nonsense. The legislation you quote simply says that an employee is entitled to an 11 hour break, not that they must take one. If both the employee and the employer are happy for 24 consecutive hours to be worked there is nothing to prevent it. I've done it myself very occasionally in the past, although as others have pointed out the brain really isn't working very well by the end.

Crazy as it may seem the current legislation allows for young employees to have their longer 12hr break split over shorter breaks.

Got any evidence for that? I don't believe it's correct.

There should, however, be an 11 hour rest period between ending one shift and starting another, and in any single week, work shouldn't exceed 48 hours (unless you've opted out or work for certain industries, which run things a little differently).
Somone needs to tell my employers about the 11 hour rest rule as they don't seem to stick to it i've finished at 10pm before and been back in at 6am!

Think the longest shift i've done is 12 hours and honestly i was verging on exhausted by the end so i wouldnt be able to do 16.

I did 13 hour shifts for 5 days straight. The company wouldn't allow anyone to work more than that without a rest period of 3 days. After the initial 8 hour shift was over it was double time for another 5 hours and the temptation of earning a lot for the month was enough to keep the exhaustion at bay.

    It is certainly possible.

I think people should know these rules - because although it's completely possible to work very long hours/have short breaks before returning to work, you should never be MADE to. I have done these very long shifts because I felt it was worth that effort on my part to ensure the very small company I work for met an important deadline. However, if I'd been asked to do it for no good reason, I'd have happily told my boss I wasn't prepared to. I would be very unhappy if the law was ever changed so I couldn't be so flexible, because sometimes it's required.

Unless you're in a job like truck driving, where the hours are restricted by law, I think employees need to know their rights and then be flexible within reason - their reason and their employer's reason.

Obviously I'm aware there are some horrible bosses/companies who force such hours on people, which is totally out of order.
