16 Hour Shift

Just wondering if anyone here has tried this or anything similar? Doing two 8 hour shifts back to back making a total of 16 hours at work.

So far i have only done 8 hour shifts. I know it will be tiring and i will need to take a minimum 20min break every 4 hours to keep me going. I still doubt the company will agree to it in case i collapse from exhaustion.

I've worked my normal 8 hour shift followed by an 8 hour overtime shift - 7am to 3pm, then 5.30pm to 2am.

I tend to stay in work (coffee shop) or the park outside between jobs.

I'm always fine as long as I have the next day off - or ideally the weekend.

Its worth mentioning I'm an office monkey, not a labourer.
That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.

  • Why are you doing this?

Legally the minimum you're entitled to is 1 x 20 minutes

Only if your employer allows this.

    Certainly not required by law.

I've done 18 hour shifts on occasion that the night shift wasn't covered and I would stay on from the late shift. Still alive! Not one to do regularly but definitely doable. In fact a busy on call shift recently had me working 20 hours - very tiring.

I've worked absolutely ridiculous shifts before - without knowing I was going to until they happened :)

Kept going on caffeine and adrenalin, mainly! I can't pretend it was very safe, but we're a small firm and when there's a completely immovable deadline (The opening of the Chelsea Flower Show was one!), then we all just keep going until the job is done.

Longest I've done is 36 hours. Four of us did it - a few others worked until they felt they couldn't go on any longer without being a danger to themselves or others.

Like I say, not sensible or safe, probably, but do-able.

(And you probably won't be as clear-thinking an efficient at the end). And definitely don't be pressured into doing anything against your will.

The maximum number of hours work in 24 hours is 13 hours.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

Got any evidence for that? I don't believe it's correct.

There should, however, be an 11 hour rest period between ending one shift and starting another, and in any single week, work shouldn't exceed 48 hours (unless you've opted out or work for certain industries, which run things a little differently).

I have in a past job done double shifts usually when someone phoned in sick and as only two on shift not always cover available.

Now regularly do 14 hour days. My business and very busy. Done happily. Most I ever on one day was 20 hours when did back to back shift and the. Loads of delays working at an airport and had to wait till last plane down.

Longest shift I ever did was 22 hours, my normal Friday nightshift of 12 hours and I was then asked to stay on to make sure that a particular press tool was running properly.
It took 3 more repairs to get it running and I waited an hour to make sure so I did not actually leave the factory until 6pm the next day (saturday)
I was called out again at 8pm on Sunday for another repair.
