Post-Office Mis-selling Special Delivery & premium services??

Hi
Has anyone else noticed that the Post Office are really aggresively pushing higher priced postal services? But doing it in a really sneaky way, which almost sounds like its the postal rules that you have to send certain things via special delivery?
This has happened to my wife (London) and my inlaws (Devon) this month alone.
They were not upfront about the fact that they basically sales-people. They asked what was being sent, and they were obviously told (its part of the law, isnt it? That they have to know)... but then they go on to say, if its such and such, you *have to* use special delivery.
Rather than suggest it, and say "if you want insurance, then this this is what you should use." Both my wife and inlaws were basically pressured and told that they had to send through insured Special Delivery. Surely it's our loss/risk to take, if we choose not to?
I complained to Post Office, and they send us "refund" via 1st class stamps, which satisfied me. But then it happened to my inlaws - and it made me wonder if this is a bigger thing going on, similar to banks?
Not sure if they're under ofcom...

Perhaps, but still relevant. Many used to send mobiles by the Signed For service - if lost, you got a claim form and the max they paid on loss was £45. Now, it is £0. They can also argue the battery is a prohibited item in standard mail, so your ire seems somewhat misplaced.0

Actually 2nd class signed for offers £50 compensation. If the battery is in the phone it's fine too.0

I find it varies from PO to PO and maybe from cashier to cashier.
I did complain once - via postoffice-tellus.co.uk (as on back of some receipts) and it calmed down.
I wonder if the branch or subPO is targeting on upselling?I need to think of something new here...0 -
I think they are pushing things, as things aren't so good for the Post Office anymore, they don't have the monopoly.
I had to return my GHD's the other day, they had emailed me a prepaid slip and asked me to get proof of postage from the PO, tons of questions by the girl, what was in the package, would I like to pay extra for insurance etc...... no just blooming well send it for me give me proof, that's it, I know had it been my dad or MIL they would've thought they had to...............damn annoying

Annoying it may be, but what if they don't ask the questions and something happens to your parcel? Seems PO staff are in the wrong these days no matter what they do.0
