My Moto E using up credit - cannot understand why!

I am getting used to the Moto E I bought last week and one thing that puzzles (and worries) me is that after inserting an O2 SIM card and buying O2 credit, I receive a message every day showing the credit is reduced, i.e, I have used some of my credit up.
I don't understand this as my computer and modem are both on from 8am to 10pm and I only use my Moto E during that time so any internet usage would be through wi-fi (the wi-fi is switched
ON on the Moto).
So how I am using credit each day? Is the phone active during the night when my modem is off?
Secondly, is there any way of stopping this? I suppose I could remove the SIM card whenever I am not using the phone, but that seems excessive apart from having the sheer hassle of taking the back off each time (why didn't Motorola include a slide off/on backing plate?!)
If anyone can shed any light on this, I would be grateful.
Thanks

Switch off mobile data which will stop the phone using any of your data allowance. It may well be updating things like Twitter, apps etc throughout the night.0 -
Thanks. Sorry to sound dim, but where will I find this? I have looked under the settings, but cannot see it there.0
-
PS. I have a pdf version of the Moto E manual but on doing a search, there are no instances of 'mobile data' in this.0
-
it is in settings -
click on data usage, then you'll see a switch for mobile data - you can flick this switch to "off".0 -
In Settings
Under mobile data
'MORE'
Switch it OFF there0 -
Many thanks indeed!0

Why do you turn your modem off at night?0
-
Because you're killing your router overnight, your E will be using mobile data (even though you don't think it is).0
