Excluding VM Cable, how are you going to get the broadband signal in to the property if you don't have one?

You can, but you'll pay through the nose if you have the broadband only (currently £28.50 per month for 50 Mbit)

I pay £19.50 per month for Virgin BB. I basically threatened to leave within the cooling off period and they offered me a loyalty discount of £7 for 18 months. I also got £80 cashback through Quidco so it works out to just under £13 a month for 50mg BB. I am on a 12 month contract.

As the OP mentions £7.50 for broadband, I am assuming that it is with Sky.


People who have line and broadband from Sky have been able to haggle free broadband, if they pay full line rental (now £16.40), upfront in some cases.


I don't know whether they have to pay an extra £2.50, as they don't have tv, as I managed free line rental and £10 broadband (ie full price for someone without tv).

as usual someone plus a reply poster wants broadband but does not want to pay the rental and line maintenance cost component for the physical line and associated infrastructure to their address. In the UK this is called 'line rental' and by decree from OFCOM is paid for under voice services.....which is why you must pay a line rental component to someone.

Perhaps if OFCOM instead mandated that all these costs were dumped into broadband charges they might be happier?
1. Broadband charges would soar.
2. Extra charge for a voice service on the line would drop to very little.

Why should it be outlawed? The broadband is delivered over the phone line.

It is up to the two of you how you distribute the bills.

Unfortunately that is what broadband costs - £16 for the conduit plus £12.50 for the broadband. If you do not qualify for BT Basic then you, in some ways, can be better off - every year you can take out a new contract and get a bundled saving. Look around - combined with cashback a telephone line with broadband bundle can be found cheaply. But you have to change your phone provider every twelve or eighteen months.

If one of you qualifies for the £5 BT Basic landline then you are stuck paying £5 and £12.50.

That looks as though you can only have basic (ie restricted ) broadband with basic phone. The 10GB allowance is easily exceeded,so things become very expensive.

I read a report a couple of months back suggesting OFCOM are looking at removing the tie between voice telephony and the wholesale line rental, to make provision of "broadband only" lines possible. The wholesale line rental cost would then have to go onto the broadband fee, which would increase it by £10 or so.
