If the WLAN is on and green(?) then it is broadcasting a wireless signal. Although it may be hidden as already suggested. Have a look and see if this is the case.

that's assuming any other networks are showing up at all ;)

There is far too much waffle in post #1 and not enough facts but I think that the statement:

"my network doesn't even show up in the list of available networks"

    is quite clear and unambiguous.

I would suggest changing the wireless channel in the router first to one in the range 1 - 10 but I'm guessing that she won't know how to do that.

Thanks for this wiogs. The summary is showing a Grey button for my wireless, indicating it is turned off, but it is definitely set to 'on' on my computer, so I'm rather confused now.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

What it is set to on your computer has no bearing as to what the router is doing.

It needs to be on on the router before it will broadcast a wireless signal.

GunJack asks a very valid question, on some laptops it's a switch, on others a function key, other times (less likely) a software issue. Can you connect to the wifi with a tablet/smartphone?

Don't have either of these new fangled gadgets, just my trusty laptop!

You need to log into the router and make sure the wireless (WLAN) is turned on in the settings

If it's a laptop, it could be in Flight Mode.

It's usually a key (most likely one of the f keys) with a picture of an airliner on it.

Hold down the Fn key, and press the airliner key.

On mine it's Alt and the airliner key (F7) but it does show an airliner in the bottom tray of the screen rather than the wireless signal strength so it's quite clear what state the wifi connection is in.

My old laptop had a small switch along the front edge which you could hardly see which controlled the wifi setting and this caught me out on one occasion when I caught it by accident.

From what the OP says it seems the router is not broadcasting a wifi signal at present.

Thank you wiogs:kisses3: Problem now sorted. Now why on earth didn't the so called Talk Talk technical customer service guy give me the very same advice you have. It would have saved hours of stress & being cooped up in a corner with my laptop, having to be connected with a very short ethernet cable.

Thank you too to everybody else who tried to help me. You're a great bunch!
