Daughter Aged 3 to have two teeth out, Can't believe it has this happened to anyone?

My DD is aged 3. She was completely breast fed for 6months then homemade food from then on.

Very few sweets, puddings, no juice in a bottle or anything like that.Teeth brushed twice a day etc.

Anyway at age of one and a half noticed one of her top black teeth was discoloured. Mentioned it to dentist at next family check up and he said it was decay. I was mortified and burst in to tears. I have two other DD's aged 13 and 10 and I've always been really keen on good diet, tooth brushing and check ups etc and no one has had anything like this.

Anyway, despite only drinking water & milk, even fewer sweets etc two of her teeth have now decayed (two near the back at the top) and dentist is recommending taking them out.

He's saying he thinks her saliva isn't blocking acid properly but I'm fairly certain he just thinks we are feeding him a line about the lack of sweets etc.

I understand that if she has teeth out it will mean a general anaesthetic and we have been refered to the hospital. Both DH and I are terribly upset, I just keep crying.

DD was very ill when she was born and I am totally paranoid about her health and the idea of an operation for her is freaking me.

Sorry this is so long but has anyone ever had this with their kids?

Thanks

My sister had to have quite a few of her baby teeth out (think it was 6 or something) when she was about that age or a little older.

None of the rest of us had that problem.
The next set of teeth were fine. ;)

Thanks Newlywed I know it happens and dentist was really nice but I'm terribly upset about the whole thing and the idea of an operation is freaking me out.

Sorry to hear about your daughters teeth. Another reason this may happen is due to reflux. If the stomach is producing too much acid it sometimes comes up and besides giving indegestion can cause decay in teeth. Does your daughter eat much fried food if so try reducing fried food all together and see if things improve.

    Hi Babsa

My son had to have several teeth out when he was about 6 or 7 under a general. Like you we were so careful but the dentist said that he had soft enamal and that was the reason. His second teeth have come through fine and as a precaution because he grinds his teeth they have put special plastic on the back teeth as his toothbrush could not get into the grooves.

But as for the op, the worst thing about it was he couldnt eat in the morning, otherwise the hospital was brilliant and he sailed through it! They had him in and out in less than half an hour and once he had woken up properly the first thing he wanted on the way home was something to eat. I was in bits I have to say but the hospital was very understanding.

I am sure she will be fine, but get the dentist to keep an eye on the second ones especially if she grinds her teeth.

    Hugs

Hi i know exactly how u feel, we had noticed that our sons teeth were going brown at the top and mentioned to dentist, we were blamed totally for this, he told us we were feeding him too much sugar etc, we werent so he had to get most of his teeth out at 18 months.

Unbeknown to us then this was due to undiagnosed diabetes which was later diagnosed when he was 2 and a half, due to all the milk he had been drinking!

His 4 top teeth have just come through now, he is now 9!

My middle daughter had to have 8 teeth taken out when she was 5. I was upset about it aswell because my kids have very few sweets and brush their teeth with supervision twice a day.

On the upside though she has her adult teeth now and she has the most gorgeous perfectly straight gnashers in the house!!!
They took my signature away!!!!

My dd is a dentist and she says that she often gets toddlers with very bad teeth. She says that often the cause is giving the little one a bottle of milk last thing. Milk contains lactose which is a sugar

I thought i was doing everything right , home made food , no sweets ect ..........she didnt have to have any out and her 2nd teeth came through fine

Her youngest brother has a terrible diet and doesnt care about his teeth , yet never even had one filling

luck seems to play a big part

both my children had decay in their first teeth. I was so strict with their diet and with teeth brushing. I was devastated. the dentist had me filling out diet sheets to see what they were eating and there was nothing to find. they both also broke teeth in minor falls...one was even hospitalised with cellulitis when he got such a bad abscess. I was never away from the dentist, he had us on a 3 month recall. at one point my daughter refused to get in the chair so we ended up at the NHS dentist for nervous (neurotic!!) children. they were checked out as kyle says for diabetes, heart disease ..you name it. I blamed myself, I dont take a lot of dairy so I thought it was all my fault from pregnancy....

anyway to cut a long story short, and to give you some hope, their second set were perfect. neither of them have fillings or have had any extractions but I felt like the worse mother in the world at the time.

Hi there my son whos 6 went to the dentist a few months ago and she said that he has 2 teeth with a hole in each which i was shocked about.she said that they would prob give him a few probs and that was it but for a few wks now hes been complainin of tooth ache and although i give him medicine i dont like the fact that he has it most days.
Do you think that if i rang them and explained whats been happenin that they would agree to take them out?
I just dont want him to carry on like it.
