If you get the assessment then is it likely to recommend anything different to an EPC?

I have just bought a house which has warm air heating which no longer works properly (very old system, the timer is broken and it doesn't produce enough heat to keep the larger rooms warm). I want to install a new boiler and central heating but the EPC doesn't recommend a new boiler at all. I don't want to spend money on a Green Deal report it if will only make the same recommendations as the EPC (particularly if the fund will run out before I can get the assessment or a quote).

There must be many with Green Deal Assessments who missed out when the scheme closed last time and will take advantage of the reopening.

How to tell if it is a gamble spending £100+ On an assessment with the fund being smaller this time?

    Odds anyone?
  • If anyone just wants a new boiler, the second measure will likelybe either a waste water heat recovery device or two external doors.

These two recommendation are very unlikely to appear on an EPC, so you must have a GDAR so the assessor can force the recommendations if it is appropriate.

To explain that An Epc will only show recommendation that make a whole 1 point difference on the rating, where as with a GDAR an assessor can pick and choose measures which make an impact of zero or above. So say doors only make a .7 improvement on the score they will not appear on the EPC, but the assessor has the option to select this on the GDAR.

Don't be tempted by cheap energy assessors, as they will be in and out and not show all the recommendations that could be available to you.

You should expect to pay around £150

To explain the reason for two measures is to encourage whole house improvements not just subsidise boilers which is the whole ethos of the green deal and makes sense.

The people who are going to benefit from this the most will be people who live in or own Victorian terrace houses

  • Given that there will probably be similar demand for the cash as last time I'm not holding out much hope that I'll be able to get a GDAR done in time for the first tranche.I'd like to replace the boiler sooner rather than later so I may just go with one of the Green Deal financing schemes instead of having to pay it all off in one big whack.

It's a shame as the grant would be really useful as we've just moved into our first place, but I can't imagine the pot will last for long, particularly given the smaller size and limited amount dedicated for changes other than solid wall insulation.

It's a bit pointless when it stops people other that those in solid wall properties doing anything though.

    What.

I was just looking at ways to get the floor insulated on a 1960's house we moved into in May - This is perfect timing, if I can find a second item to install - Waste Water recovery?...

I'd love to change the boiler, but I can't afford it, so will try and get the work done up to the £1500 limit.

Trouble is now finding someone to do it!
  • Hi,
We are very interested in the green deal scheme as we have recently bought an old granite cottage and its very poorly insulated. We still have the EPC from March – I presume this is acceptable for use instead of an assessor?
With regards the finance, we would only be able to carry out the measures if we get financial help to do so (i.e. via the loan on our electric bills) – how does it work in terms of getting the cash? i.e. if we applied to an installer, when would we get the money to pay for it or do the installer claim from the green deal scheme themselves?

    Many thanks
  • Hi,

Anyone recommend a solid wall installer in Merseyside.

It is a listed property so ideally someone with experience of internal and / or historic properties.

Only company that seems to have a reasonable website and service Merseyside is Mark Group but some of the online reviews are far from good.

    Thanks
  • I applied to the fund yesterday with a current EPC and a quote that a window and door installer emailed that morning. I had previously been speaking with true, expert green installers - as we are retrofitting our house - and they were unanimous in their belief that the scheme is about Government PR rather than anything else. None had bothered to register for the scheme. The random collection of installers on the approved list certainly didn't seem to have the expertise I'd found independently and the window installer was vastly overpriced.
  • Hi, I have had external wall insulated two months back on a house I purchased last october (2013), i have been told I am not entitled to the £500 cash back because the cost of the work was £8K so I am only allowed £6K back form the voucher (see offer below)

Offer 4: Get a £500 bonus if you've bought a home in the past year and are improving it (no change).
If you install measures in your home within 12 months of owning it, you can get a £500 bonus on top of any other cashback

Are they correct becuase I find the terms and conditions very confusing and a lot oe people are I should be entitled to the £500 bonus.

    Am I correct?
