BA usually just serve sandwiches on short haul flights except at breakfast time on any flight I have been on. Try flying some of the budgets and not being able to get a cup of coffee or tea because they have run out and have nothing left except crisps and chocolate. It could have been worse. I,m sure you would have been able to get a macdonalds meal or something at Alicante if your son had been so hungry before the flight.

Why didn't you just take the filling out of the sandwiches so at least he had some plain bread - better then starving????? I've done this loads of time for my fussy git of a son.
No point in whinging abut a sandwich FGS!!!

I have complained about the terrible treatment my mother-in-law received last year, several Emails two letters and apart from an acknowlegement NOTHING

    .
my husband 5 kids aged 3-13 and my self arrived at alicante airport in the week to catch our 16.45 return flight back to this miserable weather to lgw.
we'd planned out our day, had lunch in murcia (midday) wondered round primark and ikea and we arrived with plenty of time 45 mins before check-in even opened so waited patiently in the queue.
at the check in desk were advised there was a delay of just over an hour, a bit annoying but an hour isn't long.
went through security and wondered round the shops to kill some time and we all had a drink with the last change we had.
checked departure boards and yep you guessed it delayed even more till 18.30 so at 18.45 i went to the information desk and asked for the meal and drinks vouchers i presumed we were entitled to, only to be told that BA had informed them not to give out vouchers till we'd been delayed for 3hrs. we were finally called for our flight at 19.45 and departed at 2030. so by this time we were all rather hungry and were waiting for our meals.
the steward finally got to us and gave us a sandwich! nothing else just a sandwich which consisted of 1 half a chicken and stuffing and the other ham tomato and mustard which my son wouldn't eat. by this time it was 9pm and he hadn't eaten since midday when we had our luch. My husband asked if there was a proper meal to which the steward replied, if we'd waited to replenish the food we'd have been delayed even more then on realising what he said rephrased it to this is all we would have got anyway. now i've flown with ba on a few occaisions and if it's a cold meal you'd usually get a roll some meat and cheese a cake or biscuit ect which would comform to some sort of meal not just a measley sandwich. to say i was fuming was an understatement.
we finally landed at 2215 and after catching our trains home arrived at 2315 by which time my poor son hadn't eaten a thing since midday almost 12hrs. luckly our local sainsburys at the train station was still open and we managed to buy milk and bread and they had toast when we got home.
I will not be flying with them again and will stick to the buget airlines whom i have never had any trouble with what so ever and you know where you stand with them.

can anyone please advise me on how to go about successfully complaing to BA.
    i'm still fuming now!!!!!!!!!!!
  • I suspect BA will suggest you complain to either GB Airways or Excel Airways who operate the Alicante services on their behalf

When my kids were young, I never relied on airline catering, and always made sure that we had some food with us. To be honest, airline food is so poor (Especially Air Via) that I prefer the cheaper fares with no inflight slop.

I agree that the delay and problems with child were not good, but in all honestly, a delayed flight and inedible airline food can hardly be classed as unusual events. Live and learn and put it down to experience.

BA pass complaints on to GB - they don't fob you off and make you complain again. The services are operated under their banner so they have to take a bit of interest.

We complained to BA about a 7.5 hour delay on a flight to Crete, just before the new EU regs came in. We got nothing of any value - £50 each in BA vouchers which we've never used and which have expired.
  • Can i just point out i'm not one for complaining. all i was asking for was a bit of advice.
i would have fed my children in the airport (i'm not completely stupid nor an awful mother who was expecting ba to feed them. i had over £800 quid in the bank) but i couldn't get any cash from the machine as it there wasn't one in departures! i would have had to go back through security to get cash then have to que up again at security.
had the airline given out the vouchers when they were supposed to there wouldn't have been a problem. also, so they didn't have to give out the vouchers they made sure everyone was on the plane by the 3rd hour even though we sat on it for an hour before we even moved. thats what really p'd me off.
The steward also told me that they didn't re plenish the catering as it would have delayed us even more. (we were sat on the tarmac for an hour how long does it take?) i would have gladly gone and got it myself.

I've yet to see an airline not allow us to take on sarnies and snacks,

There is one airline I know of that doesn't allow you to!

Agree - its always worth considering the "what if" cases and take appropriate action if its not much trouble or expense. I was caught out a couple of years back when we were diverted to a quiet part of Stansted and had to sit tight for almost 4 hours due to a security issue. And as I assumed I would be fed on the plane shortly after take off, I went hungry.

So what I do is stuff my face before I get on the plane as someone else now has full control over when my next meal will be - not me. If everything is fine, then I have just another airline meal to pick at.

Should have sold them on eBay and enjoyed the cash hehe:D

I have to admit airplanes should cater a bit more to kids when it comes to food. It's not the first time I've heard about this..hell half the time i don't like everything they serve so I make sure I bring some muchies atleast but like I said, when it comes to kids i don't care what kinda airlines your on. They should offer a simple food" for kids IMO.

I'm sure after this experience she'll pack a little food!
