Blocking Ad.doubleclick.net from Windows PCs

  • Follow the instructions here, then replace the text file with the edited version. Copy the whole edited bottom box [now missing the 17,000 entries] to somewhere safe and overwrite your text file.
Why would that remove all the entries if I'm just replacing the word 'doubleclick'? What's the point of safely saving the .txt file if it's missing the 17,000 entries? This is getting beyond me, so I'd rather delete the whole thing, switch the bank a/c and start again.

You have to go through the MSE link on the TSB section here http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/banking/compare-best-bank-accounts#bonus . Ad.doubleclick records that you have applied through that link.

it doesn't have a .txt extension, or any extension, it's just hosts, in a specific directory

if you start editing, you'll end up with a hosts.txt, or an edited file in the wrong place, either of which won't change a thing, the original hosts file will still be there doing it's thing

close browser, rename the one dated 20/8 to ghosts, collect your bank dividend, rename it back, advance to Pall Mall.

if it doesn't work, run ccleaner with the dns cache box ticked, or reboot
Don't you dare criticise what you cannot understand

You may find that you need to take ownership of the hosts file and add your own username with permission to write to it before you can edit it ..

Otherwise, when you come to save, it will make you save it using another name

And if you are editing a .txt file then you will NEVER make any difference. The file which Windows uses is called HOSTS ... that's it, just HOSTS ... no file extension like .txt or anything, just HOSTS.

When did Ad.doubleclick stop being malware?

I did that, restarted and found no difference. You did mean just rename the .txt files, right?

No - the hosts file isn't a .txt file; it has no extension. Also, it's often a read-only file, so you may need to turn off the read-only flag to be able to rename or edit the file.

Click on MSE's link then check your browser history, which should tell you you've been routed through it .

Thanks, but, no thanks......As far as I'm concerned it's still malware and I don't intend going anywhere near it.
