I've turned off DNS Client Service and rebooted. After some browsing, doubleclick returns. Do I now have to modify the MVP file or something?
No thats fine. What the MVPS installation file did was back up your original Hosts file and renamed it Hosts.MVP. This is the 13 year old file.
The File names HOSTS is the active new file, which as you can see by the large file size contains lots of blocked websites.
If you open it with notepad (as described in my earlier post) you will see if contains a large list similar to this127.0.0.1 tpc.googlesyndication.com # 127.0.0.1 www.youtube-nocookie.com #[affects various videos] # [Google / DoubleClick][AS15169][66.249.64.0 - 66.249.95.255] 127.0.0.1 ad.rs.doubleclick.net # [Google / DoubleClick][AS15169][72.14.192.0 - 72.14.255.255] 127.0.0.1 affiliate.2mdn.net # 127.0.0.1 s0.2mdn.net #[affects video stream] # 127.0.0.1 static.2mdn.net #[affects Youtube] 127.0.0.1 clickserve.us2.dartsearch.net #[www3.l.google.com] 127.0.0.1 ad-apac.doubleclick.net 127.0.0.1 ad.mo.doubleclick.net 127.0.0.1 adclick.g.doubleclick.net 127.0.0.1 www.gameplaylabs.com #[Adware:Win32/GamePlayLabs] 127.0.0.1 googleads2.g.doubleclick.net 127.0.0.1 n4061ad.hk.doubleclick.net 127.0.0.1 securepubads.g.doubleclick.net # [Google / DoubleClick][AS15169][74.125.0.0 - 74.125.255.255] 127.0.0.1 ad.bg.doubleclick.net 127.0.0.1 cm.g.doubleclick.net 127.0.0.1 www.praize.com #[Adware.Praize][SiteAdvisor.praize.com] 127.0.0.1 serving.rpowermedia.com #[AdvertPro] 127.0.0.1 analytics-api-samples.googlecode.com #[Google Analytics social tracking] 127.0.0.1 s0.2mdn.net
where it blocks access (by redirection). So if you have any tracking cookies from normal website which link to these spy sites they'll no longer collect your information. You can test this out by simply trying to access any of these sites in a web browser and the browser should time out.
Also, as I mentioned in the earlier post you may need to remove certain entries in the HOSTS file to allow access to certain websites. The best way to do this is to place a hash (#) at the start of the line containing the server you want to allow access to.0 -

When you say "doubleclick" returns, get the address from the website and check if there's an entry for it in the HOSTS file.0 -

I now find that I have to allow ad.doubleclick.net in order to collect £125 for switching my bank current account. There are too many 'doubleclick' entries on the .txt to delete individually, so shall I just delete the whole file? And what about the Hosts files themselves?0

Why not just rename the hosts file (so Windows ignores it) -- maybe you'll need to log off and back on for it to take effect -- switch bank accounts, then rename the file back to "hosts" again?0 -
I did that, restarted and found no difference. You did mean just rename the .txt files, right?0

Follow the instructions here, then replace the text file with the edited version. Copy the whole edited bottom box [now missing the 17,000 entries] to somewhere safe and overwrite your text file.Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion.
