Do people expect presents at christenings?

We've been invited to a christening; where I'm from this is a religious ceremony and that's the point of it, but these people aren't religious, so - is it the done thing here to give presents at christenings? And if so, I'm guessing they would want toys for the kid? Or money? I got a card but then realised they probably expect more.
(What the child will actually need in that household is help getting acquainted with cuisine that isn't chip- or sausage-roll-based once it's on solids, but I fear that cause is just about lost. Good for Iceland, not good for the future NHS budget.)
we normally give money, then the parent can put into an account for the child or use it for the after party(if there is one) i would say a tenner a person is fair...all the best and good luck0 -
Whilst I thought the OP's post was a little bit judgemental, I can see where she's coming from and don't feel that she deserves the amount of abuse she's been getting! Grown women (and men?) acting like children....it's amazing they seem to know your mind better than you know your own OP!
Regarding a gift, I'd stay away from the usual, silver money boxes, goblets, photo frames etc as no doubt they'll end up with numerous similar items. It's usually the case.

I've already said it but I think this thread is a wind-up; just like the thread about people not having children unless they can afford them.
Wasn't so long ago some idiot threatened to manipulate these forums and I can't help but wonder if these two threads in particular are their work0 -
If the child was born in 2014 what about some coins from the royal mint? It was always a tradition to give coins at a christening.0
