BT poor broadband

I have had problems with BT, my download speed was about 0.7 , after about 3 phone calls I told them that they were breaching their contract and to be fair the speed is now about 7.

However, I still have problems- the internet drops frequently this causes chaos when my son is on his games console or I am working from home. I rang them to complain and they said that they could not resolve it over the phone but could send a broadband engineer to my home, however if they found a fault in my home or even in the grounds of my home such as underground cables that had been damaged by tree roots then they would charge me £129.00

I am now in the position of paying for a service which is unreliable position of paying for a poor service, yet if I agree to the engineer calling then I risk being landed with a £129.00 bill. I feel this is really unfair, I have been here for 14 years and never had an engineer out, its not as if they are constantly being called out.
I appear to be left with 2 choices either put up with the unreliable service or risk a bill for £129.00 if they come out.
Has anyone got any thoughts about how to resolve this?
Thanks

  • They threaten everyone with the £129 bill, its absolutely standard........ We had a very similar problem recently with speeds completely unusable even thigh I pay for the high speed fibre product up to 76Gb. I logged a fault with them and ended up with their non-English speaking drones in some farflung country reading from their silly scripts.

Like you, I was in despair - they expected me to take leave and sit around waiting for an engineer evencthigh there was no issue in the house, I was convinced. Come Saturday I was very surprised when a BT Openreach vandrove up our shared driveway and thoght I would try and see, opportunistically, if he could help. Turns out he was looking for us anyway. Did a quck check on our main socket then disappeared to the green box down the road for an hour or two. Turns out it was a faulty pair and he struggled to find a decent pair - am now getting decent-ish speeds again. And no £129 bill.

I do tend to stand over them though, when they are in the house, so no time to cause "faults" that were never there as is reported in the press from time to time. This chap was very genuine though, and fixed the problem. Annoying that Iwent weeks with the craling BB speed thigh, before it was actually fixed.

Hope you get sorted- even if you go with alternative providers, though, Openreach do most of the landline broadband upkeep anyway .

Have you tested the connection direct from the master socket .
That will probably rule in or out your internal wiring .

Is this dropped connection via cable to PC or wireless .
You really need to rule out all the problems that are your fault before calling out the engineer . Engineer will disconnect at the master socket and test the line speed .
