Good to see Ryanair doing something for the customer for once.

So now we have not only got the most expensive air fare tax regime in the world, but we've also got one of the most complex. (Different rates depending on distance, class of travel and age of traveller.)

Hardly "complex"... There are 2 distance bands and 2 rates, that's therefore 4 combinations plus one exemption.

And though I wish it went straight into green projects as opposed to the treasury's "general fund", having studied in detail the enormous effects global warming are having on the environment (much of them are "invisible" to the everyday person at the moment other than a general sense of more extreme weather, but give it a couple of decades and you'll see it...), I don't personally think punitive taxes on pollution are high enough. Despite my somewhat hypocritical addiction to international travel!

Came across this APD refund for children by chance. Just tried to reclaim this for flights booked mid March for travel in August - getting the error message refund applications will only be accepted once travel is completed. I wonder how much money Ryanair will bank because people forget or don't know about it?? But hopefully we'll get £26 back in August just in time to pay for school uniform!
  • Good luck with getting refund of child APD from Ryanair! I made my claim back last September and despite repeatedly contacting them I still haven't received the £13 due. I have been fobbed over with a range of excuses, and when these finally wore thin in or around November I was told that payment would be made within a few days. Still no payment and have chased on many, many occasions now, Is anybody else having this problem?
  • I am having the same fun with American Airlines.
Air Passenger Duty for under 16 - AA charges ?

have you considered a complaint through the CAA ?
  • Thanks, might give the CAA a try and see if they can help, good luck with AA, I think there are other airlines out there causing the same problem.

Having problems with Ryanair surprise surprise!- we booked a flt in Jan on their website for travel in July 2016. Airport Passenger Duty tax for U16 is not supposed to be charged on flights departing after March 2016, the govt had already announced this. The Ryanair website didnt auto deduct this APD, although we used Easyjet for a similar time and booking and they did it with no problems. Contacted Ryanair via webchat, initially told to claim using their auto refund page, but this only works for U11 APD (which was abolished a year earlier). Then told to make a complaint and fill a form out. Surely they must have 100's of people in a similar situation! I get the feeling they will just fob you off and weasle out of refunding. Perhaps this is something the MSE could look into?
Are they legally allowed to keep hold of a tax for a service (flights) not used until after the said tax was abolished?
