Decorating 1 bed flat - quote

Hi
I am having my 1 bed flat re decorated (517 sq ft). I have spoken to a decorator who has quoted me to do the whole flat in 1 week and provided paints/materials (at extra cost) as he can get it cheaper being a trader.
The work is:

Sitting room (14'3 x 11'9),
bedroom(14'8 x 9'10)
hallway(approx 3.72m x 0.45) - 3 spaces of work
1. Taking off wallpaper x 2 walls
2. Fixing the cracks in the walls (only a few)
3. Painting ceilings with one coat (all 3 )
4. Painting walls with two coats (all 3)
5. Build the boxing to cover radiator pipes (2 walls in 2 rooms only)
6. Taking off the old carpet and putting down the new laminated flooring and edge biding (all 3)
7. Painting skirting boards and door frames with one coat.

Bathroom and kitchen
Painting the walls and ceilings in white colour with one coat.

Total £2280
Then materials £180 on top and laminated floor price which I will pay when I know how much..think Wicks is cheaper.
Is this a fair price?
Thanks

In Red, get someone else to do it...

Materials... --> Screwfix.. and Leyland Paint.. DIY people buy Crown, Dulux etc
  • Thank you but its far easier for the same guy to do the boxing of radiators and floor than get someone else for cheaper rate, as I want it all done.
Besides that, do you think that is a fair price?

Not enough info, number of windows, type ditto doors flat, moulded, no info as to colour, type of paint, makes etc and if thats Total £2280 labour only for 1 week as you say materials are extra thats mighty high???? location would make a difference but don't see labour at more than £150- £175 per day per man ( I'm sure some painters would argue that lol)

If thats the quote they gave word for word I'd say rip off cowboy one coat on doors etc no undercoat, preperation mentioned at all etc that way also :rotfl:
  • Sorry should have given info
    I live in SE19 London.
One big window in living room, 175x130, and French doors.
    Bedroom has one window 180x175
not painting doors only skirting and door frame
This is a 2 man job
Also he said he'll prep the skirting and window sill before painting
Though I managed to get £100 off his quote
  • Add labour as above ? :rotfl:

The labour quote is £2180 after some discount but still think this might be too much. Thinking of just getting the ceilings painted and radiator pipe boxed up only then ill paint the rest which I've done before and ask a neighbour to help put laminate down which wont charge me as much as a builder .

Sounds a bit high even for two people for a week, I'd agree with above that if they're the ones that suggested and quoted for one coat on gloss work it's a bit cowboyish, fair enough if that's what you want and will be happy with.
Also are you're doors a varnish finish or similar? just thinking that if you're having all the wood work bar the doors and the doors are painted then they could end up looking rather off white against the freshly painted frames.
I'd also agree with comment regarding getting someone else for the laminate and boxing in, although I wasn't thinking of cost saving as much of getting a better end result.
  • The doors are white PVC, only the window sill and door sill where the french doors are, will be painted, also skirting and door frames would be painted. I've painted these myself, sanded down old paint, wiped away dust then paint one coat of good quality gloss, looked fine I'm no expert but it did the job for me.
Was a bit shocked at his quote, but he's coming round to start work tomorriw, 6th, so ill ask him only to paint ceiling and box up radiator pipes, will see what that adds up to before I decide. Then ill prob order my paint and laminates on line with free delivery, i don't have a car, i think wickes are cheapest..

Anyone else can advise on costs for this work or know any other decorators in SE London, highly appreciated, thanks

To give you an honest guide of time required, we have just had our loft painted by a neighbour who just charged us a day rate of £150. He took 9 days to paint 2 double bedrooms (woodwork inc doors but not windows as upvc or Velux) one bathroom (ceiling and door/surround) and one hall and staircase.

He worked at weekends to do us a favour therefore did quite short days and we caused additional work by buying water soluble satin wood that needed extra coats, I would say it should have been 7 days at £150 per day so £1050.

    We are in SW London.
  • Thank you Halle71

I just spoke to another decorator yesterday, and quoted me £950 for: painting all walls and ceiling in all of flat,
taking wall paper off x2 walls and fixing cracks/holes in walls,
    paint skirting and door frames,
Boxing radiators along bedroom and living room
Provides paint for ceiling and skirting/frame
2 man job in 2 days (weekend only)
I think this is reasonable as I only need to supply the paint on the walls
I found him from rated people web site, read his reviews and seemed positive.
Though I have never used any trader from that site so have no idea if they are really genuine..anyone can advise?
    thanks
