Another nice one, andyrules! I think I'll have a ring around tomorrow to the establishments (that word doesn't look quite right:o ) suggested here and hopefully come to a decision - that's if there are vacancies - hope so, the places suggested sound great!
Andyrules: Washing up? Shouldn't DS be doing that?? (laughs slightly hysterically:rotfl: )[0 -

LOL DS is better than his dad who had to ask DD to show him how to make toast recently - just shows also how little he knows his kids, should have asked DS really (I'm trying to bring him up as new man - DD is just looking for one!!
)
ps not sure what happened to the toast!!:eek:0 -
Hello again, all!
Well, having spent the morning trawling through tourist websites, tripadvisor, etc and then ringing various places directly (including Southlands and the Bronte - booked up or min. 2 nights), I've booked a room at a B&B called the Limes which sounds pretty good from the write-ups in tripadvisor. Has parking, not too far from city centre and available for one night only, which was the stumbling block with lots of the others. £85 for the two of us, so £10 more than the Travelodge but includes breakfast and parking which the Travelodge didn't, and so much nicer (I hope! the lady sounded lovely on the phone)
Thank you all so much for your input - much appreciated, and I'll be sure to report back after the event! xx[0 -
That sounds great, parking is difficult city centre. Hope you have a fab time, I find I get on really well with DS if we go away alone.0

DS2 waltzes in 15 minutes ago "Oh Mum, you know that Friday we 're supposed to be going to York? Well we can't go now because my band's got a gig that night, and we're getting paid. Can we go the next week?"
Me: "Oh, no problem at all son, I haven't spent the last few days hunting high and low for accommodation or anything, of COURSE I don't mind. How long have you known about this gig?"
DS2 "Ages - didn't realise it was the same 17th August as the open day - sorry" .
If it wasn't for the fact that I really want to go to York too (and stay somewhere reasonable, lol) I'd make him sort it.
Sigh. So I've rung the Limes to cancel the 17th - no vacancy for the 21st - do I know that's the busiest week of the year in York? Oh yes! Back on the room hunt tomorrow......hope there's still space on the Open Day22nd......[0 -
Whew - looks like we're sorted!
Place on Open Day on 22nd still available. After just a little bit of ringing around have booked a twin room at the City Guest House on Monkgate, which looks very close to both York centre and YorkStJohn, is fine for parking etc. DS2 happy. Hurrah! Will let you have review later this month.........[0 -
Hope you have a great time!

Hello again, all! Just thought I'd report back on the York visit. We had a great time! Arrived in York on Tuesday about 12.30, found the City Guest House on Monkgate very easily, booked in with the friendly landlady, sorted a parking permit and spent the afternoon wandering the streets, walking the walls and generally having a mooch about. We ate a carvery on Stonegate called Russels (sp?) which was OK, nice place, quite good value but food nothing special. I was then persuaded to go to the cinema
to see the Bourne Ultimatum. Ahem. Not really what you go all the way to York for, but I was being an indulgent mummy:p .
So, back to the B&B - the room had a double and a single bed, was very clean and quiet and had an en-suite bathroom, so was fine for our purposes. It was in the attic of the house, so felt a little bit claustrophobic with very low and sloping ceilings (we both clouted our heads a couple of times, lol!) Breakfast was what I imagine to be standard B&B fare - set us up for the day, anyway! It was perfectly situated for the city and the uni - just a few minutes walk to either.
York St John Uni really appealed - course info and tutors were just the sort of thing DS2 is interested in, the accommodation in the self-catered halls looked fine (anyone who has looked round a few different ones will know they vary wildly between institutions), all-in-all a very positive experience.
Thanks all for your help - just got Bournemouth (AIB) to look at now, and that's within range for a day, luckily for my purse![0
