I studied there 83 - 87 in the same department as your son's subject!

Did you ask if you could stay at the uni itself?
  • recently spent a couple of nights in york at southlands guest house, it was that good i left a review on tripadvisor.co.uk and people who have stayed since seem to agree with me. also you can walk round the city walls and come off at monk bar which is about 400yards from york st john. beautiful friendly city, almost feel envious

all the best for offsprings future

Crikey! Did you enjoy being a student in York?
Actually, I forgot to ask directly about staying at the uni itself, but I did say to the girl when I changed the date of visiting that I was having trouble finding somewhere, and she didn't raise the possibility. Having said that, I'm not sure I can face a student room - it's bad enough visiting DS1 in his, lol! Perhaps I shouldn't be so picky............:o

    Hi Bennifred

Parking is dire there isn't it, could be worth your while ringing to see what peeps do. I've stayed at other Travelodges and they are fine - clean and predictable and I'm sure would be great for you and DS. Did you book the family room, otherwise you run the risk of sharing a bed! :o

Not sure what you plan to do for eating - there's a Bellapasta down Low Petergate (Tesco vouchers), also a nice Italian down the Shambles, but you need to book. If you are really mse, don't bother with brekkie, there's a baker's Oven nearby and good old BHS if he likes a fryup!

My DS is looking at Accounts, that's if he gets his finger out and stops being so horizontally laid back!!

York is a beautiful city, I never tire of visiting! Word of warning, Traffic Wardens are HOT (and I don't mean you could fancy them!!)

Thank you! I've just looked at the website for Southlands - it looks lovely! I think it would be ideal, except they say a minimum of two nights to be booked at weekends - this probably means the date we want (only want one night), but I'll email them anyway, you never know......

Brilliant info, thanks - we both love Italian food as it happens....

I've looked at the Southlands too, looks lovely but seems to booked on your date, unless I'm mistaken. I had a quick scan, this one looks quite nice, TripAdvisor gives good writeup and there seems to be parking.

I've stayed down that street at other places (too far back to recommend) and remember being able to park easily outside on the street. It's very close to the centre, but I think might be a bit of a walk to St John's.

I should really be doing the washing up! :D

Yes, very much, although it was Ripon & York St. John in those days. It's a much better location than York Uni. The department was very good in then, a forerunner in terms of offering actual production skills.
Hope your son has a great time if he decides to go there.
