As I understand it, this has now been extended (with effect from Monday) to all Barclays Premier account customers (who then opt in)

To open a Premier Current Account, you’ll need either an annual gross income paid into a Barclays current account of £75,000+ or Savings and investments of £100,000+ through Barclays

It is still limited to Barclays cheques only at this time, with a maximum value of £500 per cheque.
Premier customers (who have opted in) may pay in up to 4 cheques per day in this way.

What's wrong with Faster Payments, DC/CC payments and PAYM?

They all require the recipient to do something before the payer can pay.

    Only?

    Any idea how many bounced?

Barclays say there are £300 million worth of cheques not even deposited every year in the UK, which is presumably what this is an attempt to improve on.

The system is already used throughout the US, France & parts of Asia.
I thought the UK was supposed to be at the forefront of banking.
We're definitely playing catch up with this one.

I like the idea of scanning in a cheque and somehow uploading it.

The mobile phone thing seems a bit of a faff, but I guess it is needed so that the software can do some security stuff.

I like this idea as not only does it mean you can deal with an annoying cheque you receive but also it means that you can keep the original cheque in case of dispute.

I think the plan in the UK was to get rid of cheques entirely and replace them with electronic payments (mobile phone payments, portable Chip and Pin machines for traders etc).

But people kicked up a fuss.

Now that cheques are here to stay the banks clearly want rid of the old clearing system of posting cheques about.

If the UK was at the forefront of banking then they'd get rid of cheques. They're an anachronism.

But the consumers who cling to cheques because they're stuck in the 1970s kicked up a fuss. The sooner people are charged for using cheques the better frankly.

I recieved an email two weeks ago inviting me to take part in the Barclays Cheque pilot.

    http://www.barclays.co.uk/MobileBankingservices/MobileChequeDeposit/P1242668620764

Has anyone else recieved the emails at all to take part?

As they said Id recieve another email shortly to advise what to do next.

I received an invitation to take part, if I remember correctly it is only available to customers with iPhones. Personally I think that the idea is great in that people who are rooted in the eighties and still want cheques can still use them and those who find them annoying and antiquated don't have the inconvenience of making their way into town just to pay in a cheque. I hate doing this especially when I have to look long and hard for a parking space and then pay car park charges and then queue in the branch.

This is yet another example of how Barclays are always at the forefront with new banking ideas.

I agree, there should be a fee for cashing cheques.

Charging for cheque usage would be most unfair. We all have different needs and ways of doing things. As mentioned in my previous post the facility to pay cheques in with a smartphone is a reasonable compromise. Just because you don't use or like cheques doesn't mean people should be effectively fined for using them. I don't like going into branches but I am not suggesting that they charge an entrance fee for those that do. :T
