Software Updater - Not Sure if Spyware/Virus

It's always satisfying to appear superior but I've come across installers where the options appear to be greyed out to fool the punter.
Oh, how the written word can be misinterpreted !! Not trying to come across as superior at all, just pointing out how unwanted stuff is bundled and how to avoid installing it. And yes, it can be hidden, but if people just looked & read a bit more and didn't just click through the update process, the vast majority of PUPs wouldn't be installed in the first place

I have to admit even I have to sometimes use Google to find out exactly what an installer is trying to get me to install. I've seen them where the PUP looks like its part of the software your trying to install.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Do you have Avast installed? There's an option in the installation settings called something like "Software Updater" that runs in the background and informs you when updates are available for installed programs.
If you run the Avast installer again, you should be able to review the installed components.
If this kind of software is useful to you, there's a separate program called Secunia PSI that does pretty much the same thing. I don't have it running all the time, but use it manually to check if everything is up-to-date (such a pain compared to the single command in Linux to update everything in one go!)0 -

No need to run the avast installer again - you can modify components this way

Yes unfortunately that's their plan. Often they use microtext with the smallest tickbox you can imagine. Presumably by probability more people just click on through to get their ware rather than check whats going on.0 -

It doesn't, if you mean the pop-ups come when you are offline. Otherwise, how would it know there was a new release?LadyMorticia wrote: »I keep getting pop-ups on my computer telling me that certain pieces of software need updating. The pop-ups aren't part of the web (if that makes sense?)

The web is the sub-set of internet content that can be viewed with a web browser. So the pop-ups could well be non-web-based.
