    Of course if we did it deliberately, but retailers don't have the onus of refunding via the same method or else AML, it's purely a business decision. A smart one as I outlined, but not law.

    Formally, they have the original card number only and can't know if it is a joint account or not unless they can see both card showing the same sort code an account number.

    Go and seek independent legal advice.
    There's laws against that you know.
    (e.g. Working Time Directive)
  • The retailer could have checked back on their records for the full card number used for the purchase and keyed a refund back to the original card or refunded by cash.
