Could your partner possibly complete his degree through the Open University?

It would be daft for the OP's partner to pull out now as it's too late for this year and fees and support loan would still need paying back.

Whether he could either wait a year before starting his second year...and working that year.........or go back part-time for year 2 would both be things to consider.

Of course a uni student has a lot more flexibility with ours for childcare and possibly even a subsidized creche etc -so it may actually be better for the OP to go back to work and Dad be the primary carer. Lots of things to look into for the long term.

As for tax credits-as you aren't currently claiming I wouldn't bother with waiting to talk to CAB but just put in an on-line claim today.

Thanks Duchy I have ordered the form to be sent to me today!

The other option is for your partner to speak to their welfare people at University who will know how all this works?

Both great advice and a good idea! I will get him to go tomorrow and see if there is welfare at his campus as its an offshoot of another that is 50 miles away or to see if there is a number he can ring!

Unfortunately not lika! His course is very specific, his campus is the only place they deliver the course in the whole of Europe!

He has suggested quitting and going back to it at a later date but I think this would be such a shame and a waste of the hard work and effort he has already put in!
  • If you dont qualify for maternity pay you can claim maternity allowance from 26 weeks onwards.

    Thank you!

Good to know about the fees duchy I did query this myself!

Taking a year out may be an option to consider however, you may be on to something with dad being the main carer etc! That has put my mind at ease a little for me getting back to work as soon as possible afterwards! :T

Yep, you still need to have worked for so many weeks within a certain period of time. Sorry it's a bit vague but it was 4 years ago when I claimed MA.

26 weeks within the 66 weeks before the 26th week of pregnancy, I think!
