Even if it does close in favour of the buyer they still need to return them tracked at their expense and upload the proof before Ebay refund them.

Strikes are easy come by now on Ebay, the damage is already done soon as the case is opened.

Not if buyer ignores the case. Unless buyer does something the case will clogs din favour of the buyer and buyer will almost certainly not be required to return item.
The postage was probably £5 on a pair of adult jeans, so it would mean the seller has no jeans and is £5 out of pocket on the postage they have had to pay.
Surely not, £2.80 2nd class RM, or £2.78 MyHermes (if under 1kg).

DO NOT under any circumstances click the 'Got a problem, ask eBay to step in button like I did, as the buyer gets a refund without having to return the item. I thought that I could leave a note and close it. It goes on and one for weeks (I had enough of the constant emails over 6 weeks and tried to get eBay to realise that a) it had not been responded to by the buyer and b) the buyer was out of time to return anyway). Nope, they just closed it in favour of the buyer and refunded the money.

I did actually do this and they closed the case almost immediately stating,

    "
eBay Customer Support has refunded the buyer.

We'll be issuing the buyer with a refund in this case. You don't need to do anything else. This case won't be included when we evaluate seller performance. Note: It may take up to 24 hours to update your Seller Dashboard.

    Final decision:
    You weren't found at fault.

    Transaction summary:
Any remaining funds from this transaction are available"

I don't get this - so the buyer has had a strop, opened a return, then completely ignored any attempt to sort the problem, so I have tried to resolve it and they have gotten the money back without returning the item and eBay have paid out. So in theory I could do exactly the same and keep the item and get my money back without impacting the seller. What the....

ETA just checked my Paypal and it says

    Refunded by eBay

    • eBay decided in favour of the buyer in a dispute filed with the eBay Resolution Centre, issued a refund to the buyer on your behalf and authorised PayPal to debit your account for the amount of the refund. If you don't have enough money in your account to cover the amount, you'll be asked to reimburse eBay for the refund.
So i am out of pocket after all, despite not being at fault and eBay saying "Any remaining funds from this transaction are available". Sheisters!
Saving for a return trip to America, 3 weeks on Route 66 for our honeymoon just wasn't long enough!

    W.T.F!! Have you disputed it?

i am keeping a beady eye on my PayPal because after this i then got a message from eBay into my eBay account saying:

s.gifA case has been opened because the buyer has an issue with an item purchased from you. We reviewed the case and have decided to issue the buyer a refund of £4.49 without any impact to you. The refund includes the purchase price plus original postage & packaging.s.gifThis case is now closed. You aren't required to reimburse the buyer or eBay and this case will not be counted in your seller performance evaluation.

You can view the details of the case in the Resolution Centre.

So i am a) totally confused and b) will be taking this up with eBay if the monies do then go from my PayPal! It may only be £4.49 but on principle (and also i'd like to understand how this all works in case it happens to any higher priced items i sell in the future)

What i don't understand the most is how this could so easily be a scam and eBay don't care, maybe they only refund on low priced items but if i don't lose out and the buyer now has their monies back and the item, does this mean there's a loophole others can take advantage of?
