I don't know if it actually happened or not as I'm not that up on Scottish politics but the Tories were talking about standing on a tax cutting platform up there. They cut income tax by as much as they can under the rules to stimulate investment and the English pivk up the tab. A masterstroke!

the scottish torries can take whatever stand they feel like, they are barely the fourth party after labour, snp, and libdems.

labour are the old 70s party of big projects and totally cocking them up 600mill for our parliment grr, oh will beats london blowin 1billion on a tent.

liberals are basicly labours lackies, they got tuition fees dropped etc but are still pretty left wing.

the snp are also way to the left of labour, let alone new labour. the only saving grace is it doesnt send anybody with a clue down south so they arent totally useless at running stuff.

the torys get like 15% of the vote, even if it wasnt seen as unpatriotic to vote to stand for them (thanks to thatchers poll tax experement) but its been like 30 years since they had any sort of grass roots orginisation.

ill give you an example, im in the eastwood constituancy, untill 97 it was still getting substantial conservative majorities. for the last election there were 7 labour officials at the poll, 5 lib dem, 4 snp and 1 tory. the guy standing wasnt even local, just some weirdo cannon fodder !!!!!!.

conservatism is dead up hear with 85% of the partys voted in seriously left wing. problem is if you work for the government or are dependant on them then its like shooting yourself in the foot.

what really gets me mad is scotland has at least 50% of its youth getting degrees, natural resources beyond belief, a massive amount of space and infrastructure and the only way you can get on is to either work for the council or move down south.

seriously, my mate has a post doctoral phd in organic chemistry(he is seriously good at it) and is talking about giving it up and becoming some kind of manager cause he wants to live in scotland and cant get a job here.

Scotland was largely responsible for the industrial revolution. The British empire could have been described as the Scottish empire for much of the C19th. Now Scoland lives off English handouts.

It's a horrible decline. It just shows you what socialism will do for a country.

Is the house mortgage free? Can't you rent out the house to provide an income? This may not suit your situation but it worked for my sister and I.My Mum was widowed(mortgage paid off) and had MS,I looked after her for 18 months but it soon became apparent that I could'nt cope. She was in a care home for almost 8 years. She recieved benefits because of the MS and the rent from her house helped towards the costs. In the end breast cancer took her.Life can be a real B**stard can't it.

Generalli- this sounds like a complicated transaction, but its certainly interesting. I will investigate. Leigthal, yours too was a helpful suggestion, but i dont think it would work, as the house would probaly yeild £5-600 permonth and the home fees are £450 PER WEEK. I acknowledge everyone elses reply- perhaps the Scotland V England topic generated as much gusto as the last world cup- but anyway thanks for your comments. I dont want to "break the law" or deprive anyone of their assests, but it is annoying. Mum has never claimed a single penny from anywhere in 83 years, she worked for 45 of those years, and she voted for a government that promised to "look after her from the cradle to the grave". Now tell me I'm the one being unfair.

Unfortunately, a generation are about to discover that they've been lied to when it comes to the cradle to grave thing. Previous governments have made some very expensive promises, soon it'll be time to pay for them.

To be fair, the OP asked "Would this be legal?" So, she's not actually proposing doing anything illegal. And, if it were legal, she'd be a fool not to do it. Since it's not, they'll have to investigate other options.

well having a boe policy to look after the south east housing market in spite of the damage it did to scotlands export market didnt help either.

we could argue if they really are english handouts or paid for by scottish oil (and under international law it is scotlands) but the fact of the matter is there is a highly educated, highly resorced, with little infrastructure issues and plenty of room for expansion which has basicly become a council scheme.

frankly i just wish they would make the dole a garanteed wage to do a job like sweep the streets etc, i dont see why i need to pay people to sit at home and council lackies to do that job, run out of unemployed and use community service criminals.

in my opinion benifits should be a last resort and you need to still earn them, if you have to go dig ditches etc then youll either get a job faster or at least learn the dicipline work takes.

Is your mum going into a home because of health or social needs? There have been test cases (the coughlin case or something similar??).

Basically if her need is health derived the PCT/Health Trust/Council cannot force the sale of her house to fund her care. Her needs should be assessed by a social worker. Take independant legal advice so you don't get screwed over by social services. Do they know your mum owns a house??

If you attempt to "hide" assets the council can come after you.

See a solicitor who specialises in this field, and don't sign anything yet!

She has Alzeimers, so its not classed as nursing care, but basic help. Unfortunately Mental Health is not regarded as sufficient grounds for help with costs. Her mental state is such that she believes there is nothing wrong with her and I think she is going to refuse to pay for her care. I physically cant cope without help from Social Services, so I dont know where to go from here. Apparently if she refuses to pay, they could technically section her as she is a danger to herself. if that happens, she would be held in a psychiatric hospital, and she wouldn't have to pay for that. Eventually though, they would move her on to a rest home. Its a sorry state of affairs. Its taught me one thing though, I am not going to accrue any assets when I retire. I'm going to spend the lot. I've worked damn hard for the NHS for 40 years, and the government are not having any of it if I can help it.
