Cancelled Flight via agent

Hi

I booked my flights to China via an agent on Air China.

The night before the flight my agent said his contact to Air China cancelled the tickets and he did not ask them to do this.

Then the next day he rebooked a flight with Cathay Pacific at no extra cost.

I had to get a flight back and land back in the U.K on Monday morning instead of Sunday night, meaning I missed half a day at work.

Do I have a chance to claim?
I did buy separate insurance, or is it a no as the airline still flew?

It's not the airline's fault if your agent cancelled the ticket. You might have a claim against the airline, but not under the EU Flight Delay Compensation regime.
