quote the 1974 sale of goods act
items sold should have a reasonable life span.
Also you should not contact the manufacturer as your contract is with the store. Argos should refund you or exchange the item. It's up to them to sort it out with the manufacturer
I seem to think that you don't actually need a receipt to take something back.
you may not get a refund but should get credit note vouchers without a receipt0 -

Do I need to have a receipt before I can get a refund ?
No.
You are still entitled to a refund as long as you can prove you bought the goods from that particular seller.
Under the Sale and Supply of Goods to Consumers Regulations 2002, any fault that arises during the first 6 months will be presumed to have existed at the time of delivery. It is therefore up to the retailer to prove otherwise.
However the item that littlegerts is referring to is over 6 months old
They need to tell Argos when it was purchased so that the sale can be traced if it is not an exclusive to Argos item then they can be referred to the maufacturer as they cannot provide proof of purchase and it is over 6 months old. As good will they could refund in the form of a voucher but they can take usage charge off aswell as the purchaser has had 9 months of use from the item but without proof they are limited as to what they can do.
What they do ot of good will is different and can depend on store to store and the attitude of the customer aswell i guess0
