You can always put a grievance and see what happens. If the wrong salary is one that can't be negotiated (ie. on a scale and could be challenged by others), then you need to take on another approach, ie. say that since it is clearly an error from the HR person, would they agree to repay part of the training (not all because after all, you will be benefiting from it, could decide tomorrow to go elsewhere where your training would mean a better chance at getting a higher paid job), but a gesture of goodwill as a result of the confusion resulting in the investment.

In that case, it was indeed a very silly thing to do before the 1st month's salary was in the bank.

This reminds me that many years ago, as I took on the mortage on my own, I was just about eligible for it on the basis of an increase in my salary. The bank asked for written evidence including starting date on letterhead paper signed by my boss and myself which constituted a contractual arrangement. I guess this is the same thing.

I agree. A verbal contract isn't worth the paper it's printed on (:o). I would have waited until after the first paycheck.

I would take it up with the MD. The OP has, however, had a significant number of HR issues in the past, so the MD might not be terribly receptive.

I asked hr that if I could demonstrate the email constituted a contractual agreement would that make any difference to their view of the issue

And they said no. It was just a mistake and that is how they would continue to regard it

Apologies; I was confused by this earlier post:
I thought a verbal offer constituted a contract so I thought I'd be safe with email confirmation

Without seeing the email it is very hard to advise. Are you able to copy and paste it here, removing the identifying information?
