  • I buy UHT milk and its brilliant .I only use it for a cuppa and in cereal or porridge, but I have used it to make custard and rice pud as well.It seems to last longer than fresh and as I am on my own I got fed up of the big bottles going off. I stopped eating bread and buying it about 18 months ago and consequentially buy very little in the way of butter or spreads(usually Clover in case the DGS arrive) and block butter only if I'm making shortbread.I eat Ryvita type crackers or Crackerbread as I've learned to live without sandwiches and lost a stone and a half in the process.I only eat them at lunchtime any way with soup and a Philly spread topped with cucumber /tomatoes. I have a cooked meal usually in the evening.I have never been much of a toast eater so I don't miss it.breakfasts are normally a cereal,or granola or porridge, with fruit or sultanas added. Plus the added attraction of a non bread menu is I don't have bread mouldering in the now defunct bread bin.(I gave mine to a CS)Crackers keep well in a lock'n'lock box and stay crisp. I have just returned from a quick shop for a few odds and ends that were needed and its my first shop this month and I have spent £7.64 and have more than enough to last until next Friday at least. It was only some veg and caster sugar and a couple of essentials that I had run out of.I now have the rest of the day to please myself what to do with instead of dragging around the supermarket getting fed up and pushed hither and thither by stressed out people :):):):) I am just about to put my feet up and do a bit more knitting for DGS blankey Only two more squares then its done and I only have the edge to go all around with red and white to finish it off.Far nicer than shopping and much more relaxing :):):)

Nifty bit of sabotage there! :)Might have to try that one myself. And because you're "not buying it", does that mean no more ironing, just smoothe and fold instead?

    Why not

Just thrown out loads of MOCs

About 11 months late joining this thread, and 5 years too late in real life, but I am posting now to subscribe and get ready for 2016.

I may be quiet for a bit as I digest the 5000 posts i haven't read yet. I needed a new project that doesn't involve buying anything, so I think I might fit right in
I think I saw you in an ice cream parlour
Drinking milk shakes, cold and long
Smiling and waving and looking so fine

Can I ask do you use milk and if so how do you only manage to purchase milk twice a month, is it long life milk rather than fresh milk?

I am trying to go to the shops less and be more organised however milk and bread are the two things that I always have to go to the shop for.

Jo - I do get milk once a week (although I have frozen it in the past, and semi-skimmed seems to be just fine after defrosting), but I buy my bread in bulk and freeze it. DS and I like different kinds of bread, so we just take out a couple of slices at a time, which avoids a huge amount of waste. I've now managed to get food shopping down to one big Ocado shop per month, which means I don't have all the heavy stuff to carry on my own, once at Aldi/Tesco combined for the bits Ocado don't do or are too expensive, plus the milk top-ups. There was a stage when I was popping in to Aldi every night after work, and that was really getting me down. Now I'm more organised, and I have a free delivery offer with Ocado at present. They bring all the bags through into the kitchen, are so polite, there are never any substitutions and for the stress it saves me, I think a delivery charge would still be worth it.

DEFINITELY not an NSD today! I've noticed recently that I've been sleeping more and, although there are a number of reasons for it, I got it into my head that I might be suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning, so I went out and bought a detector. It will last for seven years but £29.99! I'm sure I could have done better online if I'd waited, but I was just getting more and more anxious. I now know that I'm NOT suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning - I'm just worn out! :rotfl:So I filled up with petrol and also did my first online order for Christmas. That's a weight off my mind and should mean that I can squeeze a couple of NSDs in during the week.

It may be expensive DuranGirl, but taking away the worry of it being carbon monoxide poisoning is priceless, after all I'v lost friends to that perticular poisoning, so I would always encourage people to get a detector.

You're absolutely right, Boultdj. I should have bought one years ago and it has given me peace of mind. I'm very sorry for your loss - I hadn't realised until I started on the dreaded g00gling that quite a number of people are lost to carbon monoxide poisoning each year, so definitely worth the outlay.

The loss was years ago, and it made me very worried about my family, that year everyone got detectors.

  • Hiya all

bless my beautiful son - he is on the last bits of the plastering!!!!!! :j

As we took off wall paper we discovered that it was MUCH more of a job than we had thought because some idiot had put a concrete skim over crumbling 1886 plaster (house was built in 1886!). Bless him he is working really hard and has been covered in rubble and plaster dust for days but is saving me a fortune!!! (he has worked in building during his Uni holidays so is doing a proper job not a bodged one like the previous people who owned the house!) :A

    Thus very NBI! :D

Bathory - loved your phrase 'the hamster wheel of consumerism' that is just what it feels like. :T Christmas is coming and I so dont want to be engaged in that roaring carousel of tinsel and jingle bells - poor old Jesus was born poor in a stable - usually interpreted as it being an example to us all!! Um - in most cases its gone a bit wrong and off message to me!!!

I shall be giving simple pressys this year that are useful. I have decided to give DS1 and his lady membership of YHA for a year as they love the outdoors and badly need a holiday. I will offer to have the dogs for a week and help with transport (£) and so they can get away. DS2 I will buy a new proper sketch book - they are horrendously expensive but he will use it for his jewelry designs.

NBI also have only had one meal out this fortnight - with DS1 and his lady (who live 3/4 hour away) so that the brothers could spend some time with each other - it is so lovely to see them together as they get on so well and disappear in a world of their own. MY DS1 lady is so good about their relationship and, in fact, envys them their closeness. Which is great. Good value veggie meal for 4 with drinks (non alcoholic) £30. :):j
Aim for Sept 17: 20/30 days to be NSDs  NSDs July 23/31 (aim 22) :j
NSDs 2015:185/330 (allowing for hols etc)
LBM: started Jan 2012 - still learning!
Life gives us only lessons and gifts - learn the lesson and it becomes a gift.' from the Bohdavista :j
