If I am around my TV goes on for the news and weather and then sometimes if there is something I really want to watch I prefer history programmes to anything else, but my beloved Radio Four I just would hate to be without. I love the News Quiz or as at the moment the Friday night comedy is Dead Ringers.the afternoon play The Archers, all sorts of stuff I enjoy Womans Hour (although I wasn't keen when they made it in the morning instead of the afternoons so I listen to the highlights on Saturday afternoon. The Sunday classic serial is great also I enjoy Any Questions and Any Answers straight afterwards on Saturday afternoon.I could probably do without my TV perhaps more in the summer as its hardly ever on,but I do enjoy an old film now and again and I love Wimbledon and wouldn't miss that for the world. Not keen on ITV as the ads irritate me so its usually BBC 1 or 2 for me in my house0

Ahoy all
I am like Jackie O Radio 4 is wonderful - I love 'The Infinite Monkey Cage' witty, informative and good mood food! Also love Radio 3's composer of the week program - that's how I found out about Vittorio! what worries me is that without the licence fee will these and the excellent documentaries disappear?? Only to be replaced by the lowest common denominator and cheapest TV/Radio?
Nurse Maggie - I can understand not having a TV when finances are at a low we did nt have one for a while for exactly that reason. Its so wrong that the way things are currently structured should have folk in that state!
GQ your last post did make me laugh! :rotfl: You are not alone in being persecuted by TV Licence people. A friend of mine moved in with her man, kept her house (empty) and claimed a licence refund - years of grief and being accused of being a liar! I thought the legal presumption in this country was 'innocent until proven guilty' ??? A case of the monied having no concept of what it is to live without loads of the stuff or just not wanting what everyone else wants!
Talking of which - I pottered for 5 mins in an area where I dont often go into a charity shop. I was going in for a look - but was followed round the shop by one of the volunteers who as I went to leave said 'Aren't you going to buy anything then?' 'No, just looking, thank you.' I said. The expression of puzzlement on her face was amazing! Poor soul - I think I really confused her
Cant help being different! NBI btw!!! Not even a beer when in the pubs organising event!! Yea

Hi!
I lurk on this thread semi regularly as I love the concept but I can't seem to commit! *rolls eyes* Any way, in the complete opposite of the NBI concept, I've gone and bought a car. Mostly because I need to be confident driving before I *have* to.
What I want to know is what sort of things are essentials to look after it/be safe in it if I get stuck? From blanket and windscreen sponge to the big stuff. I'm intending on buying as little of this stuff as possible as most needs will probably be filled between Stuff I already have and dad the hoarder who will have multiples of many things, but I don't want his kind of clutter...0 -

Hi. You don't need any kind of any clutter in your car, the more weight you carry around the less miles you get for your fuel. Not sure what big stuff you mean. Depends on your journeys and what you are using it for. I empty my car every time I get home, then only take what I need for the journey when I next use it.
What you need is a reliable mechanic at a friendly repair garage, for your servicing and MOT. Ask friends for recommendations, you want someone who won't rip you off. I am a member of a well know motoring organisation, pay an annual fee, and they will bring me and the car home if they can't fix it at the roadside. If you wash it yourself you can get a pack of three sponges from a £1 shop, use old washing up brushes to clean the wheels. You can get car wash liquid quite cheaply, don't use washing up liquid. If you want mats for the footwells, use off cuts of ordinary carpet cut to size. That's about it really. Oh, I nearly forgot. Start saving now for your next car, don't wait for this one to fall apart. I saved for three years to buy my present car, paid cash. Happy motoring.

Thank you, this was more or less what I was looking for. GoogleTM seems to think I should carry everything from toolboxes to jump leads and sleeping bags!
I see the point of a blanket, a botttle of water and maybe a shovel in bad weather but beyond that I was a bit stuck! I suppose I should have an ice scraper thingy too. And I won't ever pay "finance" for a car if I can help it, good point about saving now.0 -
Evening.
Early days so far of my month long attempt at doing The Compact but beyond the weekly food shop [and an extra one just for YS goodies on the way home from work yesterday] no silly spending.
Bought some suet balls for the birds today as that's a priority for me and I enjoy watching them in the garden. Beyond that I bought two books in mint condition from the CS for one friend's birthday and an appropriate birthday card also from the same place for a family member.
Free entertainment has been visiting an Alice in Wonderland exhibition at our local museum and getting new library books. Finally settled down and did my tax return so a £69 gain for me there:j Yesterday I cancelled my plans to buy marmalade as I remembered that I had a tin of Ma-made....guess what Mr GBT and I have planned for tonight;)
If, like me, you like to exercise the old grey matter this link has lots of suggestions for free learning https://medium.com/life-learning/the-37-best-websites-to-learn-something-new-895e2cb0cad4 Don't forget the Future Learn courses as well.
