Hairbrained idea I had to attempt to live the month of January without shopping in a supermarket as frankly I hate them. I hate the food that I end up buying in them - although i know thats on me to take personal responsibility for, I just hate feeling 'tricked'....
I dont know why I've suddenly become petrified of trying it. Maybe its because im feeling very lazy over cooking tonight so it would be something on an oven tray. if Im not shopping in a supermarket, I wont have that fall back :rotfl:
Yes you will, with 'planned' overcooking, ie: pie for tea and an extra 1 in the freezer, same with stews, or pre-prepared veg and sliced home cooked meat, all in the freezer and ready to put in the oven whilst you have a 10 minute de-stress from what ever is stressing you[in my case normal OH]£71.93/ £180.000 -
I've managed to avoid shopping today because I CBA. Even online, for the stuff I NEED to get (like an oven, a hob, a bath, a shower, a toilet and a basin...). I think I'm allergic to shopping.
I mostly manage without supermarkets as I can't face them. When I do go, they are always a disappointment. However, I moved house last year, and still haven't found a substitute for my favourite farm shop, so have to be organised as I know they are at my local farmers' market once a fortnight and if I get up early (so I can park) on sundays I could do most of my shopping there.
For the moment, apart from salad and fresh veg, I probably have enough food in the house to last me till next Christmas...0 -

Hi CAFC, have you tried batch cooking food and freezing it? I've currently got the lurgy and can't be bothered to cook so I've taken a chilli out of the freezer to defrost which I made last month....4 minutes in the microwave and I'll have a hot home cooked meal
Maybe this would help get you through the no supermarket challenge?0 -
What is the no supermarket challenge? Is it really possible to live without supermarkets????
Hi there smileyt - some of us on the thread are considering leaving the SM's in 2015 as part of the Not Buying It starting with January. So avoiding the big four, five and chain stores opting to support local businesses and independents instead. It is a personal choice and will not work for everyone due to circumstances.
I personally plan on avoiding them on a month by month basis and looking forward to the challenge as detest them.January 2020 Grocery challenge £119.45/£200
February 2020 Grocery challenge £195.22 /£200
March 2020 - gone to pot...
April 2020 - £339.45/£200
May 2020 - £194.99/£3000 -

Sextuplets. I have one of them in my house.
How many decades of back copies of the Architectural Journals qualify as clutter? :rotfl:Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0 -

I used to work for an architect and in my experience, they can never be thrown away
I am loving this thread. I am definitely not as hardcore as many of you but the only reason I haven't given in and bought the purse I really want (and its in the sale), is because I keep thinking of this thread - I don't need it, I have a perfectly good purse.LBM = 07/09/13 Debt = £13339 (100% cleared)

How many decades of back copies of the Architectural Journals qualify as clutter? :rotfl:Psst, I once knew someone who built a desk out of old magazines (don't tell your OH that, whatever you do).
Given his profession, you may be able to intimate that the weight of the Journals is in danger of causing structural damage to the floor joists.
I'm taking 5 from the paper project, I will get all that tractor-feed printer paper de-edged.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

only one little bit of de-cluttering today. Stock cubes, well you wouldn`t believe the number that I had, so now down to 1/3 with the others in bags for dds. When they are gone then it will only be marigold for me. 3 lock n lock boxes down to one, so another small bit of cupboard space re claimed
The slow cooker veg casserole was a hit served with faggots but there is a tonne of it left, now cooling quickly outside. That is lunch sorted for two days and probably a soup as well. Likely to be with eggs tomorrow, all cooked in a frying pan, I can`t remember what it is called, like a cake. Maybe mixed with some small bits of tasty lamb next day. Anyway that will give me lots more time to myself, I wonder what will be sorted next?0 -
I had hoped to go to the sales yesterday, more to get out the house than any desire to buy anything other than gift tags, but didn't want to risk driving in the snow. I sorted through and organised my toiletries instead.
I am not a huge consumer and live well within my budget but I still have far too many clothes, books, toiletries and craft supplies. I can't seem to enjoy what I have before buying new. Part of it is the whole 'treat yourself because you are worth it' message in magazines and adverts.
I am not sure I can commit for the whole year so I am going to attempt it for three months to start with, and then review matters.
I am keeping my Christmas money separate and will use it for treats through the year. We are going to a hotel in Italy for our holiday so I will need some clothes for evening.0
