I occasionally do identical sneaky stuff to our charity shop but my OH often visits there too, sees shirts whixh are identical to ones he thinks he has in his wardrobe amd buys them as "backups" to wear when his exiating ones wear out, :rotfl:
Either that, or he has a very tactful way of playing me at my own game !!!

You need to try a different charity shop, or several of them :rotfl:

A quiet day again here, just doing a bit of vacuuming. A quick sandwich and fruit for lunch and then dinner will be some leftover bean chilli over a baked potato. I started to watch The Lost World last night but got too tired so will watch that later.:)

Thanks for that ;) I suppose it's all relative with house prices isn't it. I'm assuming you will stand to gain more than at present so the extra will be worth it ultimately?

Well yes, but only if we downsize to somewhere else after my hub retires. We will be moving to a much nicer area though so hopefully the mortgage debt will be worth it. This thread will be helpful in making me more frugal as at the moment it's voluntary frugality, not enforced.:p

I have to confess to buying a new coat in the sales with my birthday money. I don't have a coat (only a short waterproof kagool thing) and it's been so cold, it should arrive at work on my birthday so will thank dad for it.

I thought I'd be safe from temptation hanging out on OS, but I very nearly bought a pressure cooker after someone somewhere was extolling it's virtues. I also nearly bought a TV (both of these were in the online "basket" and about to be bought before I saw sense). we have one TV and DS now has 3 consoles that require it in order to use them. I don't want a TV in any room other than the lounge (the only options are bedrooms and kitchen - none of which I want one in), but I nearly caved and bought a small one to be kept in my room in order to stop the incessant arguing between DS and DD. I have however now put my foot down - they will just have to share and abide by my limits and do something else.

They normally do a lot of creative play and making and cooking etc etc, it's just a christmas "want to play with my new stuff" pinch point, but I was very close to buying a short term solution rather than thinking about it properly.

I do need to get plug converters for 2 presents that came from america (and therefore have the wrong plugs) but I think that should be it for the foreseeable future.
    :AA/give up smoking (done) :)
  • So my New Year's Resolution, apart from Not Buying It in general, which I'm not too bad at, is not to bite off more than I can chew; i.e. not to bring stuff in that needs attention, if I don't have the time or space to give it that attention & move it on straight away.

This touched a nerve with me - our tiny flat is filled with things I have collected that need repairing or cleaning up before I can sell them. Most have been there for over two years taking up valuable space. My hours at work have increased to nearly full time - along with recording a CD, sessions, and a family to look after, I have just today been able to admit it will never get done. Time to let it go.

    Thank you thriftwizard!!

  • I'm so proud, not bought in the sales this year! A big change for me!

I do however need a calendar/organiser for the kitchen so this will need to be got at some point. Ideally one with a pad for shopping lists, in order to keep low costs in the food department.

  • I am liking what I am reading here. small steps and that is key, a couple of books or an outgrown shirt to the cs, nothing major but a bit at a time makes all this long term and do-able. Going all out makes it impossible but a room at a time, or a drawer at a time, well it is miraculous over a year

I did a floor steam clean this morning, took my time and used 4 double sided mop heads. Floor is rough stone so is hard to clean but I just went at it gently with the archers on loud and tis done. Every time makes a difference. I did an hour of spinning before then, so about 10g of fibre down out of my stash and later might start on a bucilla stocking. Strange time of the year for me, neither here nor there so I need to keep quietly busy

Well I am ridiculously chuffed to report that yesterday evening 19 of my DBs old magazines made it to the recycling! He's also promised to put some clothes in the charity bag for a collection on Wednesday so we shall see!

This morning I took my mum to church: I usually drop her off then go back an hour later to collect her. I was very tempted to go along to Waitrose for a free tea and then I reckoned I needed enough bits and pieces to qualify for the 'free' newspaper. But instead I parked the car and went for a 4 mile run along the river - healthier for me and my purse :j

Keep strong everyone - I can't believe how helpful I'm finding this thread at keeping me on the straight and narrow.

    Afternoon,
Last night I went through a large tote I have.
My friend always buys me jewellery sets from Av"".
I never wear them so decided to sort them, I have 15 sets to give to CS.
I will go through each room slowly and get rid of items I dont want.
It will take some time to go through all rooms as I cant stand very long ( a few mins) so will sit down most of the time. My OH says he will help me.

We have not spent any money since the 22nd we will need milk and eggs on Tues but nothing else.:D

So purse is firmly closed :T
    Not buying it in 2015:T:T:T

Done seed audit,..definatly do not need any,for at least, 2-3 years:eek:, just wondering though, seeing as I don't eat a lot of salad, how the heck did I end up with 26 pk's of salad leaf seed's:o, realy need to keep track of what I'v got, so list of all seed's,and how many of each type I'v got has been made, and today's job is planting time list,so I can keep up to date with planting.

Should you be wanting anything other than salad leaf and fancy a swap, feel free to pm me. I've got a fair few seeds for things that we simply dont eat/i cant grow for the love of God, but salad leaf I like and we eat :p

It was the first time I'd been exposed to the concept that your satisfaction with an item was dependant on your perception of the giver's generosity; I still find it hard to wrap my head around that one.

I still find it hard to wrap my head around anyone liking me enough to spend their money on buying me a gift so the above is completely alien to me! :rotfl:

Ive binned my Gym membership this was hard but I need to force some self discipline, I have a dusty bike and striding distance from both beach and moorland I need to maintain my weight over this year as I decluttered my wardrobe

Mine is going too. Writing my cancellation notice as I type.... Im sad about it but needs must!

I '(wo)manned up' as it were and took the dog coat back and swapped it for a size smaller. Being honest with myself I was never going to get round to altering it so I feel virtuous for admitting that to myself and acting on it.

Called into local shopping centre for tea/coffee storage jars as we had a gift voucher for Xmas. Disappointing in general and I had no desire to go anywhere else after looking at these so back home again.... That in itself was a big leap. Im not a big shopper/browser really but I thought 'Id rather be at home surfing MSE or doing my OU degree work than trawling around the shops'.... Virtuous epiphany number 2 right there :T

I'm waivering on the no supermarket challenge.... More in the sense that Im fearful of failing..... Give me a boot up the bum please :(

:) Well, I am sneaking up on the sideboard in the parental lounge. It's an old-fahsioned one, two deep drawers in the middle, a cupboard on either side and legs rather than going down to the floor, so there is a fleet of long-docked small boxes under there, mostly with floating carp parked on top of them. It was from the top of one of these boxes where I retrieved and unused pic frame to frame thr great-grands 2 months ago.

Anyway, I towed out one of the boxes and found that it is full of unused tractor-feed copier paper, in a continious line. The printer which this stuff used was sold a minimum of 15 years ago, and it was old tech then. The sheets are perforated and the pierced sides tear off, and the sheets separate, but they're not the right size for either of the two modern printers in the house, so I am in the process of de-stripping their sides and then will turn them into individual sheets, then each sheet will be quartered and that's me sorted for scratch paper for about the next 2-3 years, I reckon.............:rotfl:

There are other boxes under the sideboard, but I better not pull any more out until I have finished the paper mountain.

If I can sucessfully de-box the underneath area, I may be able to get it away from the wall (we think the window key is under there) and finding the window key would be a happy-making experience.

Right, little more interwebulation, then I am back to my paper-wrangling tasks.
