Actually, although you might not like the CeX pricing, they are very transparent - unlike any other retailer anywhere.

You can go on their website and see what they will pay you cash and credit, and also what they will sell an item at.

Now tell me that Tesco, Asda, Argos or any other retailer will share their profit margin with you !

And the prices they sell (older) games at is often better than Game.

Ah yes, I'm sure CEX do this out of the goodness of their heart! One question however. As a 2nd hand retailer, exactly how could they operate without doing this?!? The other retailers you mention do not buy 2nd hand goods so it's not really a valid comparison.

You're talking of gross profit rather than net profit, the gross profit tells you very little about how much is made per item.

Even if Argos (for example) did tell you their product margin you would expect their gross margin to be much, much higher because the cost of getting it from their supplier to the store is so much higher than CEX - so I'm not really sure of the relevance?

I'd say pretty much any second hand retailer's pricing is about as transparent as it gets - you can see the trade in price, you can see the retail price, the only thing you won't know is the overheads coming off the margin. Problem is from a customer's standpoint it's impossible to get a TRUE value of the profit gained on a product as the prices are liable to change on a regular basis on both sides.

There's also the question of how much is added to each product to cover the percentage lost in faulty stock - cos we all know that it's bound to happen. While you can attempt all you want to weed out stock as people bring it in, it's impossible to get it 100% spot on unless you knock back any discs which aren't 100% pristine - which would mean knocking back a good amount of potential stock.

Would love to tell you that you make a ton of money off games - but certainly if my memory isn't failing me it's not actually all that huge. I used to be paying £27-30 to suppliers per copy of a "full price" game between 2006-2010 & selling them for around £40 because that's the price customers would deem reasonable. (And this incidentally was a major UK retailer of the time - which is no longer a credible force in games retail following an administration period.)

Might look like a killing if you're seeing a game traded in for X but selling for Y, but it's not as simple as that. As for CEX's prices, some of it's reasonable, but large chunks of it are honestly laughable - Minecraft currently tracking £2 above the most expensive retail brand new price I've seen recently.

I dislike how the store overcharges, however, they sometimes have their uses for retro games. I actually got a DS game in there cheaper than I could get it off ebay. It's rare but they have their uses.

Problem is, it's where all the stolen gear ends up (sometimes). Someone who's in the police had their house burgled and when they checked the local CEX, most of it was being sold in there.

Not a bad price if it was a genuine Apple cable actually. The ones from poundland are cheap imitations.

In the interest of fairness, I have used CEX a couple of times over the past couple of months to sell items to them for cash (i.e. not vouchers). One was an old xbox I no longer used along with a few games and the other was an original iPad.

CEX gave me about £2 less than I probably would have got on eBay for the xbox (based on recent sold items at the time) and they paid me at least £15 MORE than I would have got anywhere else for the iPad. I almost felt like I was robbing them for the price I got for the iPad :D (it hadn't been used for a couple of years and had ios5 so hardly any of the apps worked)

I would never buy anything from them though as they are vastly overpriced for dvds, games etc, nor would I trade anything for vouchers for the same reason but if you do your research then CEX 'can' be a good place to sell unwanted items (although ebay is usually much better for me.

    Just my two-penneth :)

  • CEX is what it is. I'm amazed anyone doesn't realise that for electronics (especially say phones, and yes consoles) they are near the same price as buying brand new.
For SOME DVD's CD's and older games though, they aren't bad at all.

Yes, Ebay can be cheaper, but there you run the risk of.........
bid too soon and the owner will bid against you using his multiple secret accounts
bid too soon and some numpty will also bid just because someone else has bid. Never understood that. Result it ends up selling at a price more expensive than sometimes new!

It's always worth checking Amazon marketplace or second hand on Play. Often cheaper than ebay for games and cd's.
