Current Account for foreigner?

My Natwest account was closed and I was wondering if I would be able to open a new current account with the following documents:

1) Passport with a visit visa
2) Capital one cc statement for proof of address

I don't have any income originating in the UK. I live with my parents and my expenses are paid by them. I want an account for general everyday spending.

HSBC basic account seems like a good choice. Will I need proof of income to open an account? What should I list as my occupation? I am currently spending most of my time in non-paid social service in and out of the UK.

Much depends on why your Natwest account got closed. You should be checking your credit files.

As to your occupation - it is best if you are honest about it (as wit the rest of your application). No point telling banks any lies.

They sent me a letter about the account only for UK residents. But they have not been specific. Their online system shows the account as closed with no other information. They told me that this closure would have no affect on any applications to other banks.

I was accepted for a capital one cc after the closure so I don't think my credit file will be in a bad shape.

I want to be honest but what IS my occupation? I am not employed because I am not paid. I am self employed because my dad runs a business which pays for me. I am a student because there are opportunities to learn formally and informally.

The main question I need answered is that do I qualify for an account with a visitor visa? This is valid until 2023. The law allows me. Will banks?

Have a look at this recent thread: Au Pair Bank Account
  • OP Does a VISITOR visa allow you to work in the UK?

If the answer is no and you were paying in a salary to your Nat West account you have the reason why they closed it and the problem may surface again with another bank.

I am not allowed to work but I only paid in cash. At around 1000-2000 a year. I don't have a salary. Most of my payments were to natwest cc, direct debit to paypal and withdrew about 700 cash. I did not use my debit card much.

I already have my name on a credit card bill unlike the poster in that thread. One of the reasons I want a bank account over a prepaid debit card is to maintain proof of address to avail services. Capital one may terminate my contract but hopefully a bank account will last longer.

IIRC there were other suggestions in that thread besides a prepaid card.

Which begs the question why they can't organise a current account for their offspring (assuming their offspring is not able to do this themselves). What was their answer when you asked them this question?
