So many people talking about the money they've 'saved' when in fact they have just spent more than they would have if it wasn't for the sales and ended up with more junk they don't need.

Mugs (or is that a bit harsh?)!

No that sums it up brilliantly.
  • I am fascinated by black Friday. It is such a great piece of marketing - folks aren't really getting a great deal as it looks like a lot of the prices are the same as what they can get any day online - but they've been worked into a frenzy.

A couple of my friends were asking me what I was planning on buying and whether I was staying up til midnight last night to get deals. I told them I didn't want anything which they couldn't understand 'How can you not want anything...!?" - I'd rather just have the money then whatever piece of tat they're getting excited about.

    Yes and no.

Yes - they cant help themselves, it is instinct
No - we have the ability to override instinct if we understand what is happening and why. If I see a dog bounding towards me, my instinct is to run, but I know that will likely result in a bite if I do. I can override the instinct and stand still, a lower order animal cannot and will not. Likewise, we can hold still and endure pain because we understand it is necessary. An animal must be restrained.

Precisely - like most debt problems/overspending the root is a lack of impulse control. IE "I have to buy/bet/spend/do/have this right now".

I remember many moons ago working in a bookshop and selling copies of the old classics for 25p each second hand.

Nobody (except students) was interested, not because they were cheapo second hand books but because of what they were - Moby !!!!!!, Pride & Prejudice, War & Peace, etc.

Penguin publishing then started to reprint them on very low quality paper but the RRP was just £1! Better yet, as we as a boookseller could buy them for 7p each we could do offers like 2 for £1!

Still the same stuff, just lower quality product marketed as "an offer"... Within a week we were selling more of the classics than we were most of the new fiction titles LOL

When asked if they'd be interested in buying the cheaper, better quality (and in most cases) in just as good a condition (the poor quality paper of the 'new' books meant they damaged easily) the reply was nah, I'd rather have a new one for just a tiny bit more...

Reminds me of people paying a few £00 for a Polaroid tv which would never have been stocked let alone retailed at double it's current price.

  • Black Friday is only worth it if you NEED something or planning to buy it anyway. I have been needing a new camera for a while as my one is one it's way out (it's been through jungles, desert and snow, gotten a bit battered over the years). The one I wanted was £220 but couldn't justify the price tag. PCWorld was selling it for £99 so I went and bought it as I was going to buy a new camera anyway.

However you still need to watch out, my Mum wanted to buy my Dad a new camera for Christmas but thought she would wait until today. The one she wanted to buy was £30 more expensive in the "Black Friday deals" than earlier this week!

As for these mobs, I see no logic in buying something if you probably already have one (let alone buying 3 or 4) and £150 for a neverheardofit brand TV is probably false economy due to cheap parts?

News is fascinating. Arrests in suermarkets,I am mesmerised. The world has gone mad.

I walked into the lounge earlier and my wife had the TV on with the sound turned down. When I saw the CCTV footage of people fighting in shops and snatching tellys off each other, I thought it was old footage from the looting that took place during the London riots.

When I realised what I was actually watching, my mouth dropped open. This news article has stunned me more than any other i've seen in a long time. The world has gone mad. People like this really scare me. After the news went off, there was another feature about Meadowhall shopping centre in Sheffield. They guy there said they are expecting a third of a million shoppers through their doors this weekend. If anyone's looking for a reason not to leave the house this weekend, there it is. The shops will be packed and all nearby roads gridlocked.
  • I thought Black Friday was only an American thing, I guess the craziness has travelled across the pond. I've done BF in the US a few times and it's been crazy. Also a lot of stores are doing online deals and opening stores on Thanksgiving day now because of the craziness of people getting trampled and I think killed or beaten up on previous BFs. I mostly prefer to do my shopping online or wait as the deals aren't that great.

Absolutely madness if you ask me..!! I did get my dd's christmas p.j's online with 20% off so saved myself £3.60, but didn't get swayed by the spend over £20 and get free delivery as I would have ended up spending more.. I was happy with my reduction..

Thank God for this thread, I was starting to wonder if I was the only one shocked by this phenomenon. Glad to find it in this part of the forum.

I did the Curry thing, Thursday evening as it started, waited 1/2 hour, but it was fine because it showed the time ticking by and was easy to do something whilst waiting to get on. I did because my 15yo DD wants (and genuinely needs) a laptop. I had started doing my research and decided on a model which in the reasonable price range. I was quite amused to find out that the supposed amazing, sale of the year offered that model at the same price that Amazon did 1 month ago.... Talk about taking in the gullibles!

How many of those people will be the ones posting here when they have their light bulb moment saying they have no idea what the money went on. The pictures above are such a sad representation of the whole thing, no other appropriate words than disgraceful.
