There are 2 ways of looking at it.

Firstly, if no contract was agreed then they cannot charge her for the work. But I would say it is arguable that they can come and take their materials back and even put the aerial back as to how it was.

Secondly, if a contract was agreed then they have to comply with the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2014 (link below). It sounds liek the contract would have been made on the doorstep so they would have been required to give her soem info in writing including the price and they would also have needed written permission to start within the 14 day cancellation period (you can see why this law exists eh?). If they have not got eprmission then they contract is unenforceable and they are not entitled to payment for the work carried out and additionally they may have comitted a criminal offence.

Trading Standards may wish to speak to the business to ensure they comply with the alw in future.

As other have said, although no payment is owed it may be worth just offering them a smaller amount to conclude the issue.

Well you kind of do if you don't have a telly that receives freeview on its own.

Which means the TV would probably be at least 10 years old by now. :)

There are still loads of non freeview TV's being sold on ebay and Gumtree at almost giveaway prices (only a few £s in many cases). Spend a few more £s on a freeview box and you could have a large screen working TV for a fraction of the price of a modern set.

They have offered to undo work done so she is bacm to where she started. This is fair.

If your daughter is happy with the work, she needs to work out what a fair price is for the work (get another two companies to quote for exactly what they did) then offer to pay what is fair.

How long did they spend doing the work?
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
  • Just an update. My daughter contacted Citizens Advice who referred her to her local consumer service. They have sent her details of the particular Act covering this situation in order for her to write to the company concerned. They are also notifying Trading Standards for them to take appropriate action.
