New Phone Upgrade - What to do with old phone.

Options
Hi,

Two years ago I was persuaded to get a contract phone - an IPhone 5. The two years has now passed and I upgraded to a new phone. Therefore, I am now left with my 'old' IPhone 5 - perfect condition but of course no reception etc.

I was just wondering what I should do with this now? I have never been in this position before so please bare with me if this is a silly question!

I have looked on phone recycling sites and it looks like I can get £105ish for it? Is this the best way to go?

Thank you.

Were you persuaded again to upgrade? What was wrong with the old phone? Do you realise that the new phone is nowhere near 'free'?

Yes, sell it, but do your research. Most (not all) of 'recycling sites' are scams. The provisional high price they quote is a bait. After you send the phone they will find many excuses for cutting the price and will want you to pay them a fortune for sending it back if you don't accept the reduced price. The worst sites will take ages to pay or will never pay.
A few reputable companies hardly ever offer top prices. You can try CEX store and you'll see.

You can sell it on ebay and, possibly, at a higher price. However, again, do your research and be cautious as ebay isn't the safest place either.

As the phone is locked to your network and only they can properly unlock iPhones, get it unlocked and you'll be able to sell it at higher price.

Adding to what Grumbler has said, also consider Gumtree, you can get cash from a face to face sale and not have the insecurity of eBay.

Ask your network to unlock the old phone, some will charge around £20 (like any of the EE companies) and others will unlock for free. It will add to the value and make it more desirable to a larger market.
