AVG to Avast

Bluesnake, Thank you for spotting my paranoia! Five or six years of using avg, updating the same over the years, but no requirement for email details.
(I must have ticked to accept the terms and conditions, of course.)
However, I do like the way Avast goes about it's job on my computer, (if it is actually doing anything of course!) Hover over the icon on the taskbar and a green panel with a white tick says, "you are protected".
Avg on the other hand always seemed to say that it was updating, or, two or more times during any online session, scanning!
Is Avast doing all of this completely unobtrusively, or should I have told it to scan periodically on first set up?
If you long time users can suggest any tweaks I have missed when I first installed, I will carry those out, and then happily give Avast my First name, Last name and email address.
