AVG to Avast

Hi Guys
I moved from avg free to Avast free a few weeks ago when avg decided it wasn't able to monitor email for some reason.
I am perfectly happy with the new software, it doesn't seem to constantly need to be running virus scans, although that could be something I haven't set up properly when I first installed.
However, my query is that today I got a pop up saying I needed to either register the product or update it. I would prefer to do neither really, and in fact just closed the pop up. Should I expect Armageddon shortly, or is this just one of the foibles of Avast which can be safely ignored?
Thanks for any advice!

You need to register it. That is what gets you the free one year licence.
I'm sure the other option is to upgrade, not to update.0 -
Sir, please accept this humble suggestion and keep it on you favourites tool bar

I'm not sure a temp. disposable e-mail is necessary for Avast!, in the years I used it, I never got any spam from them.0

Ditto this. Just use a regular email address. I can't remember that last email I had from Avast and I've used it for years (always using the same email address to register it).0 -
Indeed, I don't believe I've ever had an email from Avast, the notification to re-register just comes up as a notification as usual - I had it a few days ago, 5 seconds work and I'll hear nothing for another year.0

Ditto Just make certain you stick with Free ( and yes its good) Avast. Sometimes the renewal web site is very biased towards the pay for program .But thats a problem for Nov 2015.0

Yeh, never been contacted by them either. So why do they need it? Will giving them my email benefit me, or will I just have even a larger net footprint?
Just for ones own basic security, just do not give out more information than one needs to for the purpose required.0 -

So in a years time, they can email you to ask you to visit their web page.
The page is a very nice advert for their pay for Avast program. As you have used the free ( works well ) software , you are to consider wether you want the extra protection .
So no email , no reading of their ad.
If you are that paranoid , don't register, just google FREE avast , and continue to use a great program.
Ps have not paid for virus protection in the last 20 years.
pps , yes that goes back to 3.10 -

Thanks nifty, and all other responders. The pop up was a standard Avast style item and probably did say upgrade rather than update.
So, a major difference between Avast Free, and AVG free is that registration is compulsory?0 -
I should also perhaps, have asked what will happen when the twelve days left to register expires?0
