Could this be because you get the first hour of a call free then after you roll past thehour you get charged, so although you rang an 0800 number you eventually will see a charge on your bill?......if that makes sense?

0800 numbers are free regardless of duration from a landline, from a mobile they are charged from answering, except gifgaf mobile who don't charge for 0800 numbers, no mobile to my knowledge gives the first hour free.

    >That is simply not true! There is no facility to change the charging system once the call has been answered, if you rang a freephone number from a landline the cost to you no matter how many times and to wherever you got transferred will have cost you nothing, unless you called from a mobile, and that would have charged you from the call being answered!<

I'm curious about this. I've a wee part-time job in a local contact centre taking calls dialled in on an 0800 number. I have to sometimes transfer a customer to another part of the business which is an 0845 number. The script we must read to the caller is 'please note that a transferred call may be charged at a different rate'. I've always been puzzled about this as I too thought that the call would remain free. I'll ask about it when I am in next week.

A caller is charged at the rate for the number dialled, it really is that simple.
