I used the Santander in shop phone for free when this happened but on another occasion last year I found a freephone number via sayno for Lloyds and rang them, after a conversation they asked if I wanted to speak to someone else about my problem and transferred me to another dept, from that point on I was charged at the higher rate, unaware of this I rambled on not knowing until I got my bill that it was costing me so much.

That is simply not true! There is no facility to change the charging system once the call has been answered, if you rang a freephone number from a landline the cost to you no matter how many times and to wherever you got transferred will have cost you nothing, unless you called from a mobile, and that would have charged you from the call being answered!

May be you could provide a link to where telecomms experts detail how this could happen?

a few weeks ago i was charged for sending two picture messages to America. I have never sent a picture message in my life but I have received one.

There are phones that convert emojis into pictures before sending them.

I'm curious about this. I've a wee part-time job in a local contact centre taking calls dialled in on an 0800 number. I have to sometimes transfer a customer to another part of the business which is an 0845 number. The script we must read to the caller is 'please note that a transferred call may be charged at a different rate'. I've always been puzzled about this as I too thought that the call would remain free. I'll ask about it when I am in next week.

Could this be because you get the first hour of a call free then after you roll past thehour you get charged, so although you rang an 0800 number you eventually will see a charge on your bill?......if that makes sense?
